Sanford's tears

Holy crap!
Statement from First Lady Jenny Sanford - June 24, 2009

(Editor's Note: This statement was provided by South Carolina First Lady Jenny Sanford on June 24, 2009.)

I would like to start by saying I love my husband and I believe I have put forth every effort possible to be the best wife I can be during our almost twenty years of marriage.

As well, for the last fifteen years my husband has been fully engaged in public service to the citizens and taxpayers of this state and I have faithfully supported him in those efforts to the best of my ability.

I have been and remain proud of his accomplishments and his service to this state.

I personally believe that the greatest legacy I will leave behind in this world is not the job I held on Wall Street, or the campaigns I managed for Mark, or the work I have done as First Lady or even the philanthropic activities in which I have been routinely engaged.

Instead, the greatest legacy I will leave in this world is the character of the children I, or we, leave behind. It is for that reason that I deeply regret the recent actions of my husband Mark, and their potential damage to our children.

I believe wholeheartedly in the sanctity, dignity and importance of the institution of marriage. I believe that has been consistently reflected in my actions. When I found out about my husband's infidelity I worked immediately to first seek reconciliation through forgiveness, and then to work diligently to repair our marriage.

We reached a point where I felt it was important to look my sons in the eyes and maintain my dignity, self-respect, and my basic sense of right and wrong. I therefore asked my husband to leave two weeks ago.

This trial separation was agreed to with the goal of ultimately strengthening our marriage. During this short separation it was agreed that Mark would not contact us. I kept this separation quiet out of respect of his public office and reputation, and in hopes of keeping our children from just this type of public exposure.

Because of this separation, I did not know where he was in the past week.

I believe enduring love is primarily a commitment and an act of will, and for a marriage to be successful, that commitment must be reciprocal. I believe Mark has earned a chance to resurrect our marriage.

Psalm 127 states that sons are a gift from the Lord and children a reward from Him. I will continue to pour my energy into raising our sons to be honorable young men. I remain willing to forgive Mark completely for his indiscretions and to welcome him back, in time, if he continues to work toward reconciliation with a true spirit of humility and repentance.

This is a very painful time for us and I would humbly request now that members of the media respect the privacy of my boys and me as we struggle together to continue on with our lives and as I seek the wisdom of Solomon, the strength and patience of Job and the grace of God in helping to heal my family.

Sanford is a dumb fuck for A) going AWOL...he's the governor for chrissake! B) lying about it...both his absence and his affair, C) being a goddamn hypocrite...nuf sed, D) going so freakin' far away for something on the side and E) being so damn clumsy and getting caught.

He needs to resign as governor, like, right now. What a doofus.

Ah, FOX News. Crafty and sneaky and dishonest, aren't they?

I think they may have trouble making this one stick. Sanford has been the "hero" to fiscal conservatives for rejecting the federal stimulus money. He's the chair of the Republican Governor's Association. He's been a loud Obama critic and there's been talk of him as a future presidential candidate.

Maybe he's been in the press just enough so they can't pretend he's a democrat.

I simply love Jenny Sanford's statement.
And she's right, this has nothing to do with her, or her sons.

It's to do with the man who campaigns against marriage rights for gays because that would destroy the sanctity of marriage, the man who was so very active in persecuting and then prosecuting Clinton for his affair.

The GOP could leave other people's sex lives alone. Then their own lapses would be simply lapses, instead of screaming hypocrisy. I can totally understand why an alpha type male might fall for a Latin Spitfire. It shouldn't be a career destroyer.

You don't see it as topping from the bottom?

That woman is a howling bitch releasing a statement like that. I understand her hurt, but this is just laying on an extremely public guilt trip. For exactly the reasons in your last paragraph.

That's what happens when you do it the GOP way. He lives by the GOP sword, he dies by the GOP sword.

Well, I guess the lesson is that for all the old white men, there are a lot of old white women behind them perpetuating the same attitudes for their own reasons.

You're gonna blame his wife for his hypocrisy! Of course she had a reason-- that's the way her world works. She is not the hypocrite here. She stuck to her side of that bargain, he didn't. He got taken down in public, she has to protect herself in public.

See- if it were my husband, for one thing he would never have gone after other people's sex lives in the sanctimonious way that Sanford has done in the first place.

And he would never had had to confess his affair to me, I would have known about it from the beginning, and supported his and her happiness, without any damage to mine or the family's.

And he would not have had to disappear like that. And the press would never get a statement like that from me.

Because that's the way my world works.

He actually showed a teeny bit of character and resigned from the Governors post.
Now if he would resign as Governor and from the party I would feel better.

I actually believe in getting rid of the bad people in the Party. Unlike the other side who appologize for Barney Frank who had more to do with the mortgage meltdown than any other person on earth.

I'll hold your coat!

I'll hold your coat!

I agree with your comment on the sword :D
I don't think any of the current crop of politicians are worth the effort to pee on. Regardless of party, they are all owned by the same people and have no morals at all.

Holy Freak'in Jehosiphats! Stella and DP agreeing on politics!

(and me, too)

Hallelujah!

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I'll hold your coat!

And I'll bring a set of ax handles! This stupid idea that you have to be a 'social conservative' to be a fiscal conservative is bullshit. I think everybody should have the opportunity to get rich and be happy without the gov. bleeding you white (or at least paler) in the process.

I'm not blaming her for his hypocrisy, although she has taken an active role in his political career.

I'm blaming her for the sanctimoniousness that is apparent in her statement. Sanctimony is just the precursor to hypocrisy. As you pointed out, you would not have let him go off on other peoples' sex lives. She aided his doing exactly that, and bought into the whole thing too, and is now lashing out by taking him down while propping herself up. And taking the opportunity to prop up the whole "sanctity of marriage" canard as well.

I feel for her, as an aggrieved spouse. But that statement of hers reeks of passive aggression.

I see no hypocrisy in her statement. She and her husband have in the past gone off on other people's sex lives, and she's now going off on other people's sex live-- she's still being true to her values.

Suckass values, admittedly.

Oh, and about me not letting him... my point is that my SO and I share the same values as each other, just as Sanford and his spouse share the same values as each other. Our values are far more forgiving of human foibles like fucking beautiful people, less forgiving of other human foibles like hypocrisy.

He's an ass and embarrased her publicly, she returned the favor, works for me

Mark Sanford Consults a PR Specialist
Before His Recent Press Conference

(MS: Mark Sanford, Governor of the state of South Carolina
JB: June Bugg, Senior Partner with Bugg, Erher, & Lye, PR Consultants)

JB:
It won't be easy, you will be blamed
When you try to explain how you feel
That you needed more love though you were governor.

They won't believe you.
All they will see is a governor who,
Conservative, trusting in God,
Wanted some nookie too.
MS:
The way it happened was really strange.
She was just some e-mail, the kind of friend
You'd twitter sometimes, you know, just for fun

But things grew warmer.
My thumbs became sore as our texts went askew,
And I dreamed of the pampas, dear Lord--
Reborn gaucho, anew.
JB:
Don't cry about Argentina,
The truth is, you're still a father.
Forget Maria,
Go back to Jenny,
She's worth bazillions,
You've not a penny.
MS:
And for the fortunes of my campaigns
I was not made president
Though that seemed to the press that was what I desired.

I wanted beefsteak.
Grass-fed and free on the Argentine range,
Maria spread bare to the stars,
And Borges recording it all.
JB:
Don't cry about Argentina.

(JB pauses, as if listening to some internal music, calms herself, then continues on message.)

Don't cry about Argentina.
The truth is, you're still a father.
Forget Maria,
Go back to Jenny,
She's worth bazillions,
You've not a penny.
MS:
Have I said too much?
There's nothing more I can think of to say to you.
But all you have to do is look at me to know
I'd sleep with you too.
JB (Trying, trying, trying to the point of exasperation):
Don't cry about Argentina.
The truth is, you're still a father.
Forget Maria,
Go back to Jenny,
She's worth bazillions,
You've not a penny.

I'm reminded of the immortal words of the great *snerk* Jimmy Swaggert...Please forgive me for sinning against you.

Hey, just goes to show that politicians are pricks...like most other folks.

But he doesn't hold a candle to Edwards...
