Following on from Boo's wonderful Same Title Challenge idea, here's a new title to keep us focused for a while. (I have copied and pasted most of Boo's original posting as it was excellent.)

Promises

A new challenge for all.

Rules:

Poem can be any form.

Must be posted on this thread on Sunday, April, 3rd.

Title will be Promises (a villanelle, haiku, free verse, etc.)

Multiple entries allowed.

All judging, critiquing, slamming will be done by the other entrants, and will be done here, on this thread.

Each entrant must contribute something to each other entry.

After the challenge is over, you may submit or not, as you see fit. (This is a good thing; it will give you time to do revisions if you'd like.)

That's it, folks! Sign In, Get Thinking and Go write!

P.S. To The Moderators. It's a given that there will be banter on this thread. Would you please remove it all the night before we post our entries? Would one of you help with that? Thank you.

I'm in, tho I have to tell you. I suck at criticism. Long as no one expects great profound literary comments from me, I'll come up with something!

Thanks for the compliment, WSO! You're da bomb! lol

I'm in. How can one not join a challenge issued by a woman who says mumble bees? :)

What we can do once all the entries are in is start a new thread that just shows the entries. This thread can then either be locked to further comments or removed. I can take care of it either way.

Either that or we can get a Moderator- anyone know one? - who can come in the night the poems are due to remove anything not pertinent.

Glad your in, Ange.

Theres a poem or part of one in my head...

miles to go before I sleep...
... promises to keep...

Anyone know of it?

I may never live that down eh? ;)

It's okay though, because I like it. :)

I didn't find too much hassle with hunting through for the poems last time. I copy and pasted them into a word document, printed them to make notes, then copy and pasted the document (adding comments) back into the thread. It was good as almost all the poems were posted one after the other during the deadline - almost no comments between, so they were easy to find).

Sorry about the poem in your head Boo, ;) I have NOTHING in mine! lol

"Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening" by Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Lovely poem, that.

oh, in.

Have a great vacation bluereins, and don't worry, I have a feeling there'll be more of these Same Title Challenges in the future. They're great! :)

Hi mojo_cat. We're going to post our poems on the 3rd April. After that we will be all going through each poem and then posting our comments. Would you like to re-post your poem on the 3rd so it ends up being among all the other poems? It'll be easier to find that way. I wouldn't want it to get missed.

:)

alright....still not sure I'm up for commentary on *everyone's* poem (I think that's actually what the Challenge is, isn't it?)...but I'm in...

Just a bump.

I'll see you Sunday, I promise, checks in the mail, I'll respect you in the AM,
you can count on me.

*sighing with relief* Whew sandspike, I'm glad I didn't offend you too much last time.

Remec, of course you're up for commenting on everyone's poetry. Heck, if I can write the stuff, then you can comment. lol Glad you're in. :)

BooMerengue,
Angeline,
sandj,
mojo_cat,
sandspike,
Remec...

Commenting on six is going to be easy! lol

;)

Anyone else?

Come on, you KNOW you want to...

so it is in fact only 5 so far.

Oh No!

Okay, by my reckoning there is about four whole days before you have to post... how about writing another one? :) I'd love to see what you come up with. :)

Please. :)

I just realized that I'm going to be gone Sunday. (I'm going to Dumfries, VA for a gaming convention, driving back late.) Would it be okay to PM my poem to you, say, Friday morning before I leave town? Then you post it in here for everyone to read and all...

Remec, that's fine with me. I'll be posting mine up on my Monday morning (the northern hemisphere's Sunday evening), so I'll post yours at the same time. :)

(I've not heard of Dumfries, what kind of games?)

(It's a convention for mostly RPGA-backed D&D campaigns, but there'll also be things based on Gothic Earth, Modern-day Cthulu, Spies, and Superheroes.)

(Sounds interesting. I hope you have an enjoyable time.)

Anytime you're ready, just PM me your poem. I'll hold it until my Monday morning then post. :) And I promise I wont peek. ;)

promises

The promise on your finger speaks softly in the dark
where I lie, still, unmoved. The air thick with breath
and the memory of words--echoed footsteps down
an empty hall, a ringing in my ears--draw around us
like ghosts we refuse to name.

Forever seemed so much closer at the start,
when our eyes were clear and our hands clean,
and we knew what we wanted. A kiss held
power the tongue could not gain through speech,
though we knew what to say: vous et nul autre
por tous jour
, and for a moment

the words seemed right, complete. We never imagined
feet might kick or mouths bite, never saw a vow
as risk, love as loss or pain. So now we’ve learned,
I’ll try again; my promise to you: I will hurt you
as you will me, but we will heal and forgive.

promises

Your love is a promise
like the ground

the ground below, hard
concrete, littered with people
specks of dust, autumn leaves

leaves flutter downward
with only the air
to cushion their fall

falling in love is a hope for joy
and a promise of pain

pain is what binds us together
what keeps us apart

a part of my joy
is you beside me
when I wake

to wake is to know
eventually you will
sleep, just as birth
carries the weight of death

the dead and the dying
are all, we are one
or the other, life’s angry secret

a secret is a promise
perpetually unfulfilled

a promise is a circle
we are trapped inside

inside this room, behind
this glass, the echoes of sex

sex is a promise
of glass easily
broken

breath upon glass condenses
cold, the world strung out on all sides
from this window, the ground is calling

I call all the time, but you
never answer

the answer to life is
the force of attraction, the pull
of my body to yours

gravity is a promise we will
not lose the ground without finding it
hard, rushing up to greet us

the wind greets me, its thin embrace
solid as stone, as this stone ledge
that holds me up

you are the ground;
I will step out from this window and then
you will have to come back to me
