Russian election-meddling mess has given Facebook a very good reason to be afraid

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg was initially dismissive of the idea that fake news disseminated by "advertisers" via Facebook had any outcome on the U.S. presidential election. But now, he and the social media giant are clearly changing their tune.

The fact that he is changing his tune now could be due to one very serious fear factor: The prospect of regulation.

Think about it: Dozens of politicians and much of the news media have committed a great deal of the last several months working the nation up into a frenzy over the alleged Russian collusion with the Trump campaign and overall Russian election tampering in 2016. With the still slim odds of special prosecutor Robert Mueller finding any direct evidence of a Trump-Russian election conspiracy, that angry mob is going to want someone's hide over this, and it might very well be Facebook's and some other social media companies as well.

The way they would get that "hide" wouldn't be by firing, imprisonment or anything like that. Rather, it would be through increased regulation.

Facebook pushed to publicly release Russian-connected ads

A growing number of lawmakers are pushing for Facebook to publicly release political ads purchased on its platform by Russian actors during the 2016 elections.

They argue that the public should see the ads so that they can be informed on how foreign actors may try to exploit Facebook ads to influence them.

“The American people deserve to see the ways that the Russian intelligence services manipulated and took advantage of online platforms to stoke and amplify social and political tensions, which remains a tactic we see the Russian government rely on today,” Rep. Adam Schiff (Calif.), the House Intelligence Committee’s top Democrat, said earlier this week. Facebook has been hesitant to make the ads public.

Though the social media giant released 3,000 advertisements to congressional investigators this week, it only did so after initially resisting pressure from lawmakers.

Zuckerberg asks for forgiveness amid reports of Facebook’s role in elections

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a Saturday evening post to the social media platform asked for “forgiveness" amid the controversy surrounding the company over its political advertising.

“For the ways my work was used to divide people rather than bring us together, I ask forgiveness and I will work to do better," he wrote. "May we all be better in the year ahead, and may you all be inscribed in the book of life.”
