She wasn't sure how it had come down to this..... It seemed like just yesturday that she had graduated college and had the world at her feet.... She had her "dream man" (or so she thought) and they were going to spend the rest of their lives together. Then in the blink of an eye everything had changed.... Her dream man was anything but. He was so controlling. She was forced to give up her career and everything she had always worked so hard to achieve...He had made her cut off any of her family members, she couldn't remember the last time she had talked to them. She wasn't allowed to have friends either. She had nothing. Nothing was in her name without his first... He knew every dime she spent. Finally, she was at the end of her rope. She didn't care anymore what happend.... she just had to get away. But where would she go? She couldn't go home...not after everything she had said and done to them..;..... That's when she thought of HIM.... They had been such good friends growing up.... He had lived next door as children and then in college they had stayed just as close even though they had gone to different schools. She knew he had accepted a job out of state after graduation, she only hoped he was still there..... She had filed for the divorce and the papers were on the counter as she grabbed her suitcase early that morning and snuck away as he lay passed out in the bed from having drank too much the night before.

It took her three buses and two charter flights to get there, but when the plane finally landed and she stepped off she could finally breath.... for the first time in years without fear. She had no idea what she was doing there.... What would he think, it had been so long since she had talked to him...... What if he told her to go away? SHe had to at least try. She googled his name and found an address which she hoped was where he lived.... She took a cab to the address and it pulled up in front of a little house in a nice little neighborhood.... It was as she walked up the front steps and knocked on the door that the waves of nevervousness hit..... Her hands were shaking and she bit her lower lip as she waited.......

Chris woke up that morning at 6 in the morning as he usually did to get ready for work. He'd been recruited by a high profile hospital almost straight out of college. The pay was good and the hours were decent, the patients were sometimes rude and obnoxious but that was a small price to pay for his dream job. He tossed and turned in bed for a while before stretching, letting out a low groan as he did, and finally sitting up. He took a look at the clock on his bedside table and mentally calculated how much time he had left until he had to be into work. "Eh, enough time." He shrugged and walked to the bathroom for a shower.

He stepped out of the bathroom feeling clean and refreshed, he pulled on a clean pair of boxers and clean shirt than walked to the kitchen for a quick breakfast. He poured himself a cup of orange juice, he'd never been a big fan of coffee. The eggs were on the frying pan and the bacon was ready to go in as soon as they were done. He took a sip of his orange juice as he scrambled the eggs when a knock came at the door.

He looked at the time on his phone and wondered who would be visiting this early in the morning. He turned down the heat on the stove as walked to the front door and peeked through the peephole. "Kali?" He asked himself. It had been a while since the last time they talked. He quickly opened the door "Kali? How did you find me? Why didn't you tell me you were coming?" He smiled as he gave her a hug and looked down noticing her suitcases. "What's going on?" He pointed down to her suitcases. "Come in." He took her bags and walked her into his living room.

She couldn't find her words when he opened the door and gave her such a warm greeting. How could he be so welcoming after everything? He had told her many times he didn't think Dave was the one for her but she didn't listen.. She smiled and stepped inside, "I can't believe I actually found you on the first try. I thought I would be riding all over the city looking." she ran her fingers through her long hair, a nervous habit she had never been able to kick. She knew she had a lot of explaining to do. She took a deep breath before she started, "I'm sorry I didn't call, there wasn't much time.. I didn't know where else to go. I couldn't go home..." she trailed off for a minute as tears started to run down her face. "I just...... I just... I had to get away and I have nothing.... And the only person I could think to run to was you Chris.." she wiped her tears. "I don't mean to intrude on your life, I know how unfair it is to show up crying with my entire world packed in suitcases at your front door asking for your help. I just don't know what to do." her hands were shaking a little as she wiped away fresh tears. It was then that it hit her, she was seeing her best friend after years apart. "wow, how rude... It's great to see you! You look amazing!" she smiled.

"What's wrong Kali? What do you mean you can't go home?" He sat her down on the couch and sat next to her facing her. "What happened between you and... What's his name? That so called husband of yours." He always had a bad feeling about the guy and never really got along him "Did he do something to you?" He looked all around her body for any signs of violence.

He listened to her some more and moved a hand to her back, rubbing gently trying to soothe her. "Don't worry you're not intruding... Even after what happened I still consider you one of my best friends." He smiled. "You're welcome here anytime." He took her hand and rubbed the back of it looking into her eyes. "You're welcome to stay here for as long as you need, you can use my guest room." He smiled pointing down the hallway.

He smelled the eggs burning on the stove and ran back into the kitchen. "Crap, crap, crap!!!" He turned off the stove and through the eggs out. "Make yourself at home, I really wish I could get the day off to help you out with whatever you need but I'm still new sadly." He shouted loud enough for Kali to hear.

He walked back into the living room and stood next to her "Ummm, we'll talk as soon as I get back from work yeah? I want to know everything that's been going on with you." He hugged her again and walked back to his room.

She tried to pull it together when he ran to the kitchen. How could he be so sweet after everything?, that's why she had come to him wasn't it? She smiled when he mentioned having to work. "don't worry about it. I don't want to disrupt what you have going on here. I will just be here.... Go do your thing." she carried her bags Dow. The hallway to the spare room while he got ready for work. When he was ready to leave she looked up from her thoughts and smiled "look at you, all business..... I'm really happy for you." walking over to him and wrapping her arms around him in a tight hug, "thank you. For everything."

He put on his suit, grabbed his messenger bag and took one last look in the mirror before leaving his room. He saw she was already in her room, hopefully she'd make herself at home while he was away. "I don't know about all business but I do make this look good don't I?" He chuckled. He wrapped his arms around her "You don't have to thank me for anything, no matter what happens I'll always be here for you." He smiled and pulled himself away from her. "Ok well I better get going or I'll be late." He walked towards the door and turned back towards her before leaving. "Oh umm, there's clean towels in the hallway closet, I'm sure you can find the bathroom, foods in the fridge help yourself to anything, and umm just make yourself at home ok. Mi casa es su casa, as they say." He chuckled and walked out the door. "See you later!" He shouted before shutting the door. Got into his car and went to work.

She laughed as he modeled his suit. "well business suits you well." she watched him head to the door. "have a good day.. Don't worry about me, I think the time for tears has passed."

He left and she was left to herself. She went to the room he had given to her And took her time unpacking. She knew a shower would definatly make her feel better so she wandered down the hall to find the bathroom and clean towels. As she showered she inhaled that familiar scent... It was so utterly Chris. She scrubbed the gross feeling of bus and planes from her. She slipped on a pair of yoga pants and a tank top. Well that killed a couple hours..... She walked through te house stopping to take in all the details... Pictures off his family, people she had considered to be her family too... She saw awards in frames as well. It all made her smile tosee her friend ha done just what he had always wanted to do. She was proud of him. She had no idea what his hours were but she figured she couldn't just sit around and do nothing. She walked to the kitchen and looked at what he had to work with. He had everything she needed... She pulled ingredients out and started the process of making her grandmothers spaghetti... The sauce would take all day but it was worth it... Plus it was good reheated so even if Chris had to work late or had other plans it could be eaten the next day.... She just couldn't sit with her thoughts.
