Rumsfeld takes action on the REAL problem

Today we're told that 'intelligence' says a major terrorist attack is expected in the U.S. this summer.

(a) Duh. I also notice that Homeland Security has chosen not to elevate the alarm level from...um...what color has it been? Yellow? Beige? Which would seem to be a contradiction, if we weren't so used to contradictions now that they begin to make perfect sense.

(b) Does anyone know whether this intelligence is fact-based? Faith-based? Premium-brand or bargain basement? Is this from Chalabi?

Sadly, and absolutely seriously, I watched Ashcroft delivering the bad news last night and it struck me that I should be able to believe my government about something this serious. I should be able to accept a statement about my country's security on its face value. And that's no longer possible.

The timing of the announcement is suspect. (President's numbers at an all time low; more disturbing and violent prison photos in danger of being leaked to the press, including a filmed homicide.) Everything is now suspect. God, how I miss the heady days when the most damaging lie in the White House was, "I did not have sex with that woman."

I thought that went without saying, i.e., Politics of the Absurd, Sher.

All politicians lie. Part of the job description. And y'all wonder why I don't vote. They're all as bad as each other, I tell ya!

I think he needs to be sprayed, like a roach.

All people lie. The Pope probably exaggerated a bit with his fishing buddies back in the day.

We're not talking about telling a fib here, R. It's hard to believe that the enormity of this crisis and the calculated way in which it was created, without regard to the consequences, remains relatively unimpressive.

No wonder it seems hopeless.

Reporters and journalists, on the other hand are supposed to at least seek the truth.

If a politician can get away with a lie, that's one thing.

If the reporters do not check to see if the politician is lying that is an altogether more serious situation.

In 2002, the story was WMD —

When former UN weapons inspector, Scott Ritter, said there were no weapons of mass destruction, Paula Zahn accused him of drinking Iraqi Kool-Aide.

Now it appears that Zahn and her peers were drinking Iran’s Chablis.
