Rumsfeld takes action on the REAL problem

I guess that's a step.....in what direction I'm not sure. Isn't that typical, one group ruins it for all the others:(

Did you hear Bush's "speech" earlier? That man couldn't deliver a live speech and pronounce everything correctly, if his life depended on it.

During the piece I heard, he said "Abu Ghraib" three times, and pronounced it differently (and incorrectly) each time.

GAG

Rumsfeld has a book of poetry
Pieces of Intelligence: The Existential Poetry of Donal H. Rumsfeld

everything in it can be summed up poetically.. erm.. ironically with the poem entitled
Needless to Say

Needless to say,
The president is correct.
Whatever it was he said.

freedom of speech should be taken away from those who weild power.. wait.. did i say that?

Government in action, it's a frightening thing.

I'm still wondering, how much good do you think the government could actually do for the world if they weren't always worrying about election time and campain donations?

I don't think GWB had done a single thing yet that wasn't calculated into his re election campain. (Actually I don't think he has done anything good at all, but that's a topic for another time)

Isn't banning the cameras now like closing the stable door firmly after the geegee's run away?

Not exactly

It’s more like puttying shut the keyhole after your baby brother peeked through, saw you screwing pop, then ran to tell mom.

That may be so, but I think the main point is: whether or not photos were taken of what went on, it still went on. There just happens to be photographic evidence to prove it; which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Lou

Edited to add: VB's metaphor is a good one.

It looks like the purpose behind those photos was to be able to blackmail the detainees into gathering intelligence for the US military. They thought that the Iraqi men would be so afraid of the loss of face if the photos were made public that military intelligence could run them as spies.

If that's true, then the whole abuse scandal definitely goes much higher up than these 7 GI's.

It's hard to think of any reason why else they would have taken so many photos, and even made videotapes.

Very insightful Dr. M. I haven't been paying all that much attention to the scandal myself. I was so disgusted with the whole affair that I have been avoiding it a little.

But I believe you are probablly very close to the mark.

At the Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education celebration several weeks ago Bush gave a brief speech. I mean, honestly - watching Air Force One land nearby was far more interesting than what he had to say.

Local stations showed the entire thing (it was just a little over five minutes) and it was certainly very "election-worthy."

AFTER the speech Bush immediately walked over to a church choir that was also on stage. They had beautiful choir robes, lovely voices, and were predominantly African-Americans. He stood between two members, hugged them both, and then mugged for the camera.

Then he turned and left.

Blatant electioneering - pissed me off!

The more I watch of it, the more blatant it becomes to me. Now I think I hear it in every word he says and see it in his every action. Maybe I'm just too much of a cynic.

both ways

Is he some kind of conspiring danger or a witless buffoon?

I never bought the "dumb as a hake" theory, myself. He just looks dumb. He's shrewd enough to see through the brick wall in time to dodge the bulldozer.

And power is almost as important to him as money, maybe more.

Most journalists seem to agree that this is the most politicized adminstration in history, which means that almost everything it does is decided by matters of politics. The reason is Karl Rove, Bush's political adviser and reputedly the second most powerful man in Washington, who sees everything as politics.

I truly believe that one of the reasons for the War in Iraq was political. I believe that Bush & Rove figured we could walk all over the Iraqi army, and he figured this would be something like Desert Storm: quick, relatively painless, and popular. Certainly the June 30th deadline for turning over sovereignty (and remember, it was originally the deadline for bringing our troops home) was selected with the Republican convention and the election in mind. Do the war, and bring 'em home in time for some ticker tape parades. Perfect politics.

Does anyone recall the Theatre of the Absurd? This administration really seems to be the "politics of the absurd", as if the only point is to be in power to have power (which of course means retaining and increasing personal wealth for those in control). It's the most vicious and insidiously malignant politics I've ever witnessed.

The war (on Iraq and terrorism et al) and all this crappola about protecting freedom and the American way, etc. is just part of Plan A. What scares me now is what the fuck Plan B will look like.

Today we're told that 'intelligence' says a major terrorist attack is expected in the U.S. this summer. Absolutely no specifics of course. Fuck, I could have predicted that, and for Halloween and Christmas to boot.

Perdita

I agree. Quite frankly I'm absoluty amazed that it hasn't happened yet. Dispite statements by politicians and officials to the contrary, the USA is incredibly vulnerable. Any idiot with a few thousand dollars can rent a truck, buy a few thousand pounds of fertalizer and some diesel fuel and cause some mass distruction.

There is no rocket science involved, no massive intelligence gathering needed. Any idiot can look up how to make explosives online and purchase supplies with credit cards. I could pick out several targets off the top of my head that have little or no security at all and have a massive destruction potential.

The officials are lying to the public in assuring them that everything that can be done, is being done. It is just telling the unwashed masses what they want to hear, placating them till election time.

And once the election is over, if GWB has won, which he probablly will, (unfortunatly) it will be back to the warmongering, let all of the special intrest groups back in and continue to turn just about every country in the world against us.

The highly agitated,
