Wassup with those people who consistently act in a way that begs the question...

Are they unfathomably rude or merely another retarded roadkill on the highway of life?

I blame it on a lack of proper upbringing, and the fact that we need to use corporal punishment in our justice system.

If we are going to punish the corporals, we have to punish the privates and the sergeants also.

Anything less is arbitrary and capricious.

Hey MM. Are you referring to anyone here, or just in general?

Not someone here or pertaining to Lit at all but surely you know of the people I speek.

(Hope you are well, Ms. Minx)

Define rudeness in this context.

It's kind of a subjective, culturally relative thing, you know? Like making eye contact is a sign of respect in many cultures, but deferring eye contact is a sign of respect in others. So someone who is used to being given eye contact meets up with someone who thinks it's rude to do so, and then the first person thinks, "How rude, he wouldn't even look me in the eye!" Know what I mean?

Well, it seems that I may be considered one of those people, at least at Lit.

I do, however know of the people about whom you speak.

Today I was waiting at the tollbooth to pay, and the person in the car who was currently paying the toll took way too long to get his money together. He could have gotten it together (or had his passenger do it) while he was waiting on the line. Then when he was done paying, he sat there for another minute, doing who knows what, while the rest of us are behind him, waiting for him to move his ass. Unbelievably rude- no consideration whatsoever for the rest of us.

He had no clue he was being rude and I think that cluelessness is even worse than being rude and knowing that you're being rude.

(I'm doing ok- how are things where you are now?)

Hmm

Yes culture thing, some folks are raised to be polite and respect their elders and betters, some are dragged up in ignorance of anything polite. Simple as that.

There are some thing that are rude in every culture. Cutting in line. Talking during a movie. Passing gas in a crowded car.

You know... things that you should be beaten about the head and neck for.

I think rudeness is more prevelant online because there's no one around to hold the person who's been rude accountable for their words. Something I heard from Harlan Ellison some time ago about this in particular stuck with me.

On the internet, there is always that unfair back door out of social interaction, no face, no name to put a person's actions to, no accountability. So people believe they can be as rude on here as they want to be.

If I were to suddenly come into a LOT of money, I would pay a group of hackers to hunt down rude people online and turn their computers into thousand-dollar paperweights.

*nod*

well, yes and no. Clearly, there are people who are just not brought up to be respectful, period. But what form does showing respect take? I happened to think of the eye contact example because yesterday I was reading something about the border patrol and the officer was talking about being culturally sensitive - apparently if he is questioning a Mexican person, and that person keeps their eyes downcast, that is the way they were raised to show respect for someone who is in the more powerful position. But if an officer is not aware of that, he/she would think that the person is maybe being willfully disobedient or disrespectful, acting suspiciously, etc by failing to look the officer in the eye, and that could potentially have some serious consequences.

But yes of course, some things are just plain rude. Like, what the fuck is up with spitting? Why are there so many people - and, I have to say, it seems to always be men - that think it is perfectly ok to just, you know, spit while walking down the street? Fuck me, that just makes my skin crawl.

Totally agreed. Something about being so out-of-sorts as to not see ones rudeness is infuriating. Enough so that I want to educate the person on just how rude they are being with a enjoyable-for-me 'talking to'.

(I'm doing ok- how are things where you are now?)

Very well, damned different though.

Hahah! Yeah! Now THAT'S a worthy cause! I'd pitch in for that!

Yes this is really inconsiderate rather than rude I feel, (same difference I know), you find this one everywhere, in the market where the person in the long checkout line pisses about with little urgency.
The person who parks their car half blocking your drive, or double parks obstructing the roadway, this motoring related ignorant behaviour falls into the inconsiderate category as well.
You'll often find that these people who don't give a thought for others are yuppies, highly educated well paid erks in expensive cars, or paying for their half dollar newspaper with a credit card holding up the fast checkout lane.

Sign me up for helping fry the ignorant on-line bastards PC's as well, these coves make me laugh actually, all big hard man talk, the hard man avatar and handle, Mr Big's gunna get you.
One must visualise a weedy spotty faced little erk getting his/her revenge for all the bullying at school by issuing abuse to others over a safe link.

pops..........

i think its just all apart of life, as long as there are people there will always be those who insist on being an ass

There will always be people with clashing personalities. If someone clashes with me, I see them as assholes. But the next person may not see it the same way I do.

Diversity should be applauded not bashed. I would rather be different than everyone else instead of a carbon copy.

Well, Bob Bytchin is back!

I kind of put people who are thoughtless in the "haven't got a clue" classification.

Then there are the truly rude people. The people who say hurtful things.

I always kept a sweater at work because the heat was so unreliable. One day it was really hot and we were all down to the least amount of clothing possible. Someone from another office came through that I know and said " You look so much nicer without one of those yukky sweaters on." I wanted to say, "well fuck you, too. You are much more attractive when your mouth is closed."

Bitch, moan. Okay, I'm done.;)

Rudeness and ignorance should.
