Neither. Not really. Here, this is an issue in my head so let me say my piece by comparing it to Canadian sports if I may.

Canada's national hockey team had a similar situation, Patrick Roy, the best goalie in the league decided not to play for Canada at this years olympics. He was upset, believe it or not, at the slap in the face he took for not being one of the first 8 players selected and having to work out for his spot. Now, no one cheered him on but we were disappointed in his absence.

But how much attention did we pay to remedying the situation? None. The best goalie didn't want to play for us so we went with Martin Brodeur who is probably the second best goalie out there. If he didn't like it we'd play Cujo who is a world class goalie in his own right. Jeez, there were 8 or 9 goalies I was comfortable having in net.

The surplus of Canadian talent made a goalie of Roy's stature expendable(We won gold didn't we? We wouldn't have won golder if Roy was in net)

But look at Basketball now. Canada's level of talent in roundball is not, to put it politely, as deep as our Hockey talent. We have some middle of the pack NBA players, some good European players and Steve Nash. An NBA All star. On his way to being the best Ball player we've ever turned out. He's the heart and soul of our national team.

Now, lets say that Steve whined about something, said he wasn't happy with something, said he wouldn't play for Canada unless it was resolved.

Well, guess what, the basketball fan in me says that's it. Fix it for Steve. Steve is the best thing we have and I'd rather see him out there than the other 14 guys combined. Truth of the matter is that right now, in my mind Steve Nash runs Basketball Canada. He's the one real talent we have and I want to see him out there, even at the expense of team unity. More to the point I want a coach who will maintain Steve's ego(Or his fictional one he's a real cool guy apparently) and keep the team alive.

It's all about depth of talent.

Ireland needs Roy Keane, more than they need McCarthy.
