Has anyone here had their rotator cuff repaired? What was your experience? Any problems/complications? Any tips or secrets for someone that might have to undergo the same ordeal?

Thanks,

Are you talking hip surgery?

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and connective tissue in the shoulder.

I had a rotator cuff injury about five years ago from a show I was performing in. After a bit of physical therapy, I was okay.

However....

I was playing softball a few weeks ago....and after throwing the ball about 15 times, I could not move my arm anymore. Pain like you wouldn't believe. I still can't raise my arm without pain...and I no longer have medical insurance.

From what I hear the current surgical treatment involves a repair via arthroscope (the way I had my two knee surgeries).

An exam by an orthopoedist specializing in sports medicine would be a good idea. That is, if you have medical insurance... :)

Feel better, PBW....

Thanks Nigel. Yeah I do have insurance and I do have an appt with a orthopod for next week. I'm almost 99% sure I have a torn rotator cuff. I initially injured it about 7 years ago throwing a softball. But I never went in and got it repaired. These types of injuries kinda go away, but never "heal". I never got back into softball and over the years I've been able throw a softball or football for a short period before the pain would come back. But I rarely throw things anymore so it's never been a big deal. Recently (November) I took up swimming. I go swim once a week to suppliment my cycling. I usually swimming anywhere from 0.5 mile to 0.8 mile. But this swimming has seriously reaggrivated the injury to the point where I'm in constant discomfort/pain. So, I'd like to get it fixed and get back on schedule with swimming/cycling. I just hope it's not a long rehab period.

Depending on the actual injury, you may not even need surgery. My rotator cuff is shot, but not the point of surgery.

Antibiotics, exercises and/or ultrasound treatment may be all that's necessary.

Arthroscopic is the most common surgery, unless it's a really severe injury.

Recovery time is quite long and I've heard of doctors repairing the joint too tight wehre the range of motion is comprimised.

Everything depends, of course, on the quality of medical care you receive. The range of outcomes varies as widely as what you've read above. Anywhere from too tight repairs, to repairs where they might not have even bothered.

IMO, you won't be back swimming any time soon after having the surgery. Investigate alternative therapies such as mentioned above. Do surgery as a last resort.

My husband has had the surgery twice on the same shoulder. Still not fixed. Recuperation time was several months as best as I remember. He still has pain from time to time, and the shoulder threatens to come out maybe once a year. Much better than before, but not optimal. Medical care was military, so there you go. They're not the best and brightest of our medical field for the most part.

Good luck.

Well I imagine I won't be swimming for a month or two, maybe 3. And I can handle that. The thing I can't handle is not cycling for a month. That is just not going to cut it.

So hopefully we can find something that works.

You know, even if it's your shoulder, they still have to give you a full protocological exam before they can perform surgery on you.

My son just injured his from swimming this week. His shoulder had been giving him some trouble this fall. He took three weeks off to travle over Xmas, and, when he went back to practice, he tore something up in there. He said his shoulder hurts so bad he can't lift his arm over his head.

He's supposed to go to the orthopedist soon, and we'll find out what is recommended then, I guess. I'll be happy to pass on whatever I find out through him.

Found out that full recovery time for the shoulder is approx. six months. Must be pretty involved in there.....when I had my second knee surgery (torn ACL) my total recovery time was 12 weeks. Mostly because I have a graft replacement from a donor achilles tendon rather than them harvesting a strip of the patellar tendon. Full recovery from the second type of surgery - 12 months.

The quick recovery time was one of the reasons that a sports orthopedist was recommended to me. I did physical therapy sessions with a UCLA basketball star and a martial arts action movie actor type person..... :)

The end to a promising career.

It might not be as serious as your rotator cuff, I had a severely torn labrum and bicep tendon, where it ties into the shoulder. The surgery was a couple hours, but the recovery is going on 3 months and I am still not able to lift any real weights in the gym. I am still in rehab for another 6 weeks.

That's kinda what I'm hoping for... except not that long of a rehab. I can deal with not being able to swim for several months... but I'd rather not stop riding... That'll kill me.
