My partner and I are into some light bondage. We've used things around the house like bathrobe ties and stockings but we're thinking rope. We've also got access to an inexpensive supply of rope in just about every type of material, natural and synthetic, and different types of braid.

So I'm looking for some suggestions as to what material and what kind of braid what's good for bondage rope. Thanks in advance.

Bondage rope can be made of cotton, silk, hemp, and all kinds of things.

Materials aren't as all-important as you may think, it's the texture of those materials that are important. You need to buy and use something that isn't abrasive on the skin. Also, price doesn't really matter when it comes to rope...if you love a 25 dollar rope and use it all the time, and that 300 dollar rope sits in the bottom of your play box, which rope will become more important to you?

Here's a way to keep your ropes from unraveling without knotting the ends.
Before you cut a rope to length, wrap a piece of plastic electric tape at the cut location.
Slice the rope through the tape.
Dip the rope end, with the tape still on, in a rubber coating like Performix's Plasti Dip.
Allow to dry.
Now you're got a rope that won't unravel and the end is no larger in diameter than the rope's body.
Enjoy.

Old silk neckties.

Works like a charm and leaves a minimal mark on the wrists & ankles. Not to mention they're dirty cheap if you just want to hit up the local Salvation Army. You can actually leave them in the bedroom innocently without incurring the suspicious & prying eyes of guests who snoop.

This depends. I have several sets of rope, each made of different material. For newbies, who tend to tie too tightly and not in a manner that lets the rope do the restraining, I suggest the kind used in sailing that is double braided and has a tight polyester cover to minimize rope burns. No smaller than 3/8". Such as this:

However...half of the restraining process in my opinion are the marks that are left...you know...the indentations in the skin that can last for a couple of hours afterward and may even leave a slight bruise. This way she has something to run her fingers along to keep her appreciating the effort after the fact. That depends on the what the person being tied can handle. Nothing works like hemp http://hempbasics.com/shop/ecom-prodshow/4710.html or Manila for that, but you must be careful not to tie too tighly cause it can leave very painful burns if you are not careful. I like 8mm here.

The key to any rope restraint is to disperse the effect over a large area and not to a single point. IMO too many people tie tightly to prevent movement...but I find something like the 2-column tie here http://www.twistedmonk.com/video.htm works so much better. It is very comfortable and then all of a sudden the person realizes "oh fuck...I can't move...how did that happen?". Also...I do not like to tie so that blood flow is ever restricted. Some people like that effect, but I don't...limbs don't have to turn blue for a good restraint.

If you use a nylon or polyester rope, you can do this same effect by taking a match to the end and burning it just a bit.

Might try asking in the bdsm section. Homburg is our resident rope expert there.

1/4 inch spectra braid. Stronger than steel, easily spliced, knots easily and when you are done having sex you can use it to pick your car up with a helicopter... if you have a helicopter. If you don't have a helicopter you can use it hold your trailer together in a hurricane.

Don't overlook other materials

While rope of various kinds is excellent, don't overlook other useful materials for bondage....depending on your desires.

There are some excellent "stretchy rubber tubeings" that don't mark and are very easy to use because knots are not required using the "stretch and tuck" method. Very good for breast and scrotum bondage....or for a quick hand binding.

Enjoy.
