I am curious what this is all about. Does a person join and continue a story someone else started?

Man, there have been a lot of registered but few posts members coming out of hiding lately.
Both boards should have a 'sticky' (or more) at the top of the list of threads. I don't know much about either but did participate in one story on the 'Sexual Role Playing' board. It was a new story, the OP (Original poster) indicated all were welcome. Some threads are closed for named players only.
Take a look at both boards and their respective 'stickys'.

RPs (roleplays) come in several different varieties.
1. Some happen between only two people - these are generally marked [closed for...]
2. Some are for many people, buy you must create a character and have them approved by the person running the roleplay before the game starts. This happens in threads marked [OOC] (out of character) In this case players may or may not be permitted to create multiple characters, may or may not be permitted to RP certain types of sex, and may or may not be required to pair up their character with another player's character before starting.
3. Some are completely open, you just start playing and any character creation is done in-thread.
4. Some RPs are done in first person (I charge toward the dragon...) and some in third person (Fred charged toward the dragon...) - this should be consistent for all players in a given RP.
5. Some RPs happen privately via PM, IM, or email.
6. Some RPs are written to be converted into stories and published to the literotica archive or elsewhere.
7. Some RPs are based on a dice RPing system such as GURPS (but this is rare on Literotica) and some are based on an anime series or TV series - players usually must be familiar with the system or series before joining that RP.
8. Due to literotica's rules some things may not be RPed at all: underage characters, bestiality, hardcore non-con, and snuff.
