Tony Rodham Attacked
Tony Rodham, a brother of Sen. Hillary Clinton, was assaulted early Sunday by a man who says he saw his own girlfriend having sex with him, according to police.
Daniel Coyne, 45, was charged with assault, burglary and trespassing in the attack on Rodham, 47, at the Rodham family's summer cottage in Lake Winola, Pa., a small vacation community about 115 miles north of Philadelphia. Coyne was released yesterday from the Wyoming County Correctional Facility on $25,000 bail, according to the Associated Press.
Coyne told police he climbed onto the porch of the cottage around 5 a.m. and saw his 36-year-old girlfriend and Rodham having sex in the living room, according to a police affidavit.
Coyne is accused of breaking into the cottage and attacking Rodham. The noise wokeTony's brother Hugh Rodham, 49, who came downstairs and ordered Coyne to leave, according to the affidavit.
Coyne returned to the cottage a short while later to retrieve his house key from the woman and, according to the affidavit, attacked Tony Rodham again. Hugh Rodham and the woman helped to restrain Coyne after the second attack, police said.
Police arrested Coyne after he called them from the emergency room at Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock, where he was treated for lacerations, a swollen eye and a dislocated shoulder.
Tony Rodham, a Washington consultant, told police he hit Coyne in self-defense. Tony Rodham, who is married to Nicole Boxer, daughter of California Sen. Barbara Boxer, suffered scrapes on his face and ear and a swollen nose, police said.
The police report did not indicate why Coyne went to the cottage in the first place. "I think everyone was shocked this intruder broke into the house," Hugh Rodham's attorney Nancy Luque said yesterday. She added the brothers are restoring the cottage.
Coyne's preliminary hearing was set for Aug. 28. No one answered the phone at his home yesterday. Sen. Clinton's office did not return calls.
