ROCKY II and You

ROCKY II is the most romantic movie ever made, because it’s most obviously about the truest and most tremendous sacrifice required between a Man and a Woman… or the balance that’s necessary, to truly be a 2-person whole human. Rocky is a man, who must protect. And he struggles within his simplicity; what he ought to expect from himself. Adrian is a woman who does not want to blindly support a man, unless he has her best interests in mind (better said, the both of theirs). They are absolutely in tune with each other and yet grappling with their own self-interests.

As well all do. In perpetuity.

Pre final act) Rocky has gone the ‘self’ route, unable to exclude the male within him – he must box. It’s what he does. He must be allowed, to be a man (or how he defines that for himself). And he MUST provide for the family; them other commercial attempts ain’t workin’ out. Adrian, is pregnant, in some months due to achieve the most miraculous act any human can ever achieve – give birth to another. Her conflict may be even greater than Rocky’s, given the sacrificial role she’s undertaking. Which results in…

A near miscarriage. And, a Coma.

Their singular interests, nearly cost them everything. Nearly cost them, well – plurality; to be more than yourself.

So Rocky completely drops out of his singular pursuit (if it’s even fair to call it that). All that he cares about is being by Adrian’s side. He’s made the wrong decision, and if she dies because of it? So will he, most definitely. Death – of every kind – had been in the balance, all along.

And when Adrian awakens, all she cares about… and this really chokes me up, it gets me every time… is that Rocky know she accepts who he is as a man – and he ought to go out there and WIN. Just Win! Because that’s what’s best for not only him, or her, or them, but globally, universally, beneficial. The RIGHT – to succeed.

It’s so exceptionally courageous of her to say that to him. THAT’s what she wants to say, coming out of a coma? My god! Apparently Adrian found a clarity while under that the rest of us can only help to absentmindedly discover. She has achieved – grace beyond herself. It’s wholly believable and I just think it’s perhaps THE most endearing shot I’ve ever seen. It absolutely blows the edges off of the screen. THAT… is a woman I most desperately want to earn.

As a man, I can’t describe the enormity of what she gave him in that moment. It’s not what normally happens. And somehow I knew that, the first time I saw it, when I couldn’t be more than 10yrs old.

Naturally, Rocky goes nuts in training, just rips the city of Philadelphia apart. He’s got kids following him around through the streets, wholly inspired by his efforts. Another gripping shot; tracking: that last kid doing his damndest to chase Rocky down before he scales the steps like never before… the kid is chasing after him, PUSHING Rocky, but he doesn’t want Rocky to slow down so he can catch him – he’s screaming, “Go… Go… GO!!!!” instead. The kid wants nothing more than for Rocky to go faster, even though he’s chasing him. He doesn’t want to catch Rocky. He wants his current best to not quite be good enough; that Rocky is faster. Having something ahead of him… is good for the spirit of pursuit. (And I actually think THAT kid, the hero of the entire situation. It’s central to everything I just drew up. That kid – is the purpose, of everything. All of it.)

These are the things that got us out of the caves and landed a man on the moon. It’s the reason there’s an Internet, so you can read my thoughts or decline them. It’s the reason there will be something AFTER what we’re currently doing. It’s the ONLY thing keeping NEXT alive (as far as humans are concerned, the planet has its own ideas). The idea that you can ALWAYS, try harder. Do more. Is true and correct.

But I digress…

This time Rocky wins. Many forget, Rocky lost that 1st fight vs Apollo Creed. Not this one. He wins.

Because THIS time? Adrian was on board. Not begrudgingly, but all-in.

There’s no chance in hell he wins without her blessing. Nothing has happened at ALL without Adrian. Nothing.

But she gave it to him. She believed in him.

So he delivered.

Against all odds.

Cuz that’s what can happen, when a man and a woman concur on a common objective…

Now tell me again why that’s dumb and Casa-fuckin-blanca actually makes ANY sense at all as the most romantic movie of all time?

… dumb bitches.

PS My bad. I promise out.

I happen to agree with most of this post. I might not be full hog on saying it's the most romantic movie ever made, but it does get to me.

Let's not forget, "Rocky" (the first one) won three Academy Awards while nominated for 10!

In so many ways, Rocky II always felt to me like the perfect sequel. It picks up where the last move left off and keeps us immersed in the world we loved so much from the first movie. The feel of the movie remains the same as our unlikely hero falls victim to his simpleton-like ways. According the to the film, Rocky earned $37K after taxes and with that money, I believe he does precisely what the character should be expected to do: "invests" in a house, a fancy car and some cool clothes. In today's dollars (2013) those winnings amount to just over $100,000.

His inability to read was a surprise. I felt Rocky was punchy and unsophisticated; street smart without being of below average IQ but his inability to read leads me believe our beloved Rock ain't that dang smart. I never took him to be a rocket scientist, but he walks the line barely above mental retardation (defined as " underdeveloped, esp mentally and esp having an IQ of 70 to 85").

Still, he remains a pure man, absolutely true to his convictions with a near child-like innocence.

I can't over-emphasize the impact of the hospital scene when Adrian says to her husband, "Win. Win." The sacrifice of that woman changed me. It's a chilling moment. In some ways, it's a damn scary moment, too. What if he doesn't win? What if he can't? What if the training sacrifices he made during her coma carried too high of a cost?

Awwwww.

NOW HEAR THIS. NOW HEAR THIS.

Females commit to the following things, they do not commit to fairy romantic bullshit:

MONEY/WEALTH, VIRILE SCHLONG, GOOD LOOKS, A GUY WITH SOME LEAD IN HIS PENCIL, and A GUY WHO WONT LEAVE THEM.

Candy and poems and sweetness don't cut it with females.

This looks really familiar so I'm pretty sure it's been posted before. It's also wrong. Rocky is incredibly romantic. All the others are just dumb except that last one that wasn't too terrible and Rocky IV which is pure awesome but probably not for the reasons Sly intended.

I'm sorry I can go for them being good movies but nottttt the most romantic.
