Jake had always been in the shadow of his older sister Hailey, and of course he would be. While his sister was outgoing, athletic, talented, smart, funny, the complete and total package basically; Jake was none of those things. Well he didn't think he was. Jake was always a shy kid with shy passions, from reading books, to playing video games, to writing, everything he enjoyed he did alone in his room.
As he grew older Jake began to fall in love with creating a world of his own fantasies. He grew up reading about dragons, wizards, and the like for so long that he found his own little passion in creating his own world. He developed his own rules for magic. He wrote about the history of this world of Artica he created in his mind. Painting the landscape of his dreams onto pages and pages of journals. He even dabbled a bit in drawing, giving himself a more tangible and visual representation of these characters his mind was giving birth too.
Through out high school he developed his world and his talents. None of which really got noticed by his family, who remained enamoured by his sister's very public accomplishments. Their father and mother were both sports stars in high school and college. His father Dan, a quarterback, and his mother Marla, a volleyball super star. They were made for each other, and as a result his sister being a star athlete made her the superstar child.
Jake stayed quiet and stayed alone. Interestingly enough, that was perfectly fine with him as it gave him his own little world of creative freedom.
Yes, Jake and Hailey were very much different.
Jake sat alone in a corner booth as Hailey and her team celebrated yet another victory. Yet another trophy to add to the case in the hallway. Another chance for Hailey to shine brightly over her brother. If Jake had been any other person, he might have been jealous of her. Instead he was happy for her, and happy that nobody noticed him.
While Jake enjoyed writing and drawing and creating this world and these character stories, he was deadly afraid of having to show them to someone. He almost feared being acknowledged for his work, whether it was good or bad. He liked doing what he did, he liked putting words and pictures to his imagination fueled by a childhood of books. But unlike his sister, he feared judgement for what he had created.
Even as he sat in the booth in the pizza parlor, writing into a composition notebook, he keep his arm positioned in such a way that nobody could see what he was writing over his shoulder. Not that anyone would even take notice of him in the cloud of fame that was his sister's great victory.
