If the witness is correct, this was a serious felony. Novak must have known he hit the guy, or else he should stop driving. I suppose he got some friendly judge to release him on his own recognizance. Most people would have been in jail overnight, charged with hit and run, and would have had their bail set the next day.
It's nice to be a rich celebrity and have influential friends. That's probably why he was charged with such a relatively minor offense.
