Rise of the Phoenix

John loathed to run, but she was right, with insufficient ammo, they were sitting ducks. He had a hard time keeping up with her, she ran like a frightened gazelle and John had to run at a crouch to not get scalped by the rocks overhead. He followed her closely and didn't see the edge as he was looking back to see how far behind the Contams were. He barely had enough time to sling the P-90 across his back and tuck in his arms before they hit the water. He noticed that Koda showed for him to follow her and he did so. They surfaced in an air pocket and he looked at her, the water dripping from her face seemed to enhance her beauty.

"Contams usually can't swim. We can catch our breath."

John found this remark strange, but then again he saw them using tactics today, a scouting party and they used flanking maneuvers. Drawing the machete he wiped the water out of his eyes with his other hand.

"I think we will have to get..."

Something strong yanked him back into the water, luckily he was taking a breathe at that moment. Stabbing with the machete the sharp edge severed the fingers from his leg, then the Contam came at him, murder in it's eyes, but John just jammed the machete into it's open mouth and twisted the blade, he could feel the Contam's jaw break and the machete dug into it's neck, cutting right through and severing the spinal cord. John went back up and spat the water out of his mouth, he noticed that Koda looked slightly shocked, but not scared, good he liked a woman who can take care of herself.

"Get us out of here now"

I am also same opinion with this post.

Koda looked at John and nodded. They were at an understanding and that was the main thing. Okay, he had forgotten. She can forgive him of that. He better not have forgotten anything else. Like he was married or some shit or she was going to lose it. He began speaking about the mission and Koda pushed her female jealousy aside. The situation was smashed; done and they had bigger things to think of.

"We can start tonight. I want to take care of this fucker fast. I want to know what he's doing and stop him." Koda's eyes were dark with vengeance.

She went back to the cabinet and stopped abruptly when John said there were throwing stars in there and gave her permission to browse. She smiled as she saw the 10 pretty little stars. She knew she was going to take those. She pulled off the shelf what looked like a thick stick. She thought it was like a very thick drum stick when she pulled on the top and saw it was attached by hard wire. It wasn't very long more than her wing span, but she saw all uses for it including strangling someone. She was going to take that as well.

Koda knew she was probably taking too much. She would need to leave some things behind if she was going to be light and fast which meant she was going to leave the guns and ammo behind for the lighter blades. She hated making that decision and made sure she had enough throwing stars, throwing knives, combat knives, sword, and other blades she could carry.

Koda got dressed wearing mostly black. Her boots were worn, thick, and comfortable. Her clothes were tight against her body and didn't billow out so she didn't lose speed. Her weapons were easily accessible, plenty, and light. She was ready. She turned to John and kissed him soundly on the lips. She nodded awaiting for his command.

John Collins

He had been busy while Koda was getting ready, he had dressed into Urban Riot Gear or URG for short. It was a new type of armor that was implemented shortly before the shit hit the fan. It was light, but could stop high caliber round as well as the thinest stabbing weapon, it was kevlar, just better. Unfortunately he did not have any for Koda, he knew that it would have stopped a Contam from harming her, but he just had to rely on her survival skills and his shooting.

He had also set up a small pack to carry that housed a few rations and more importantly water, as well as a small medical kit. He looked at her when she came in and gave him a kiss on the lips, he smiled.

"Hell if you dress that sexy each time we go out to kill something I'd take you out hunting every day,"

He chuckled at his own little joke and leaned down to give her a kiss on the forehead,

"Just want to grab the guns then we can go."

He got the minigun, which with its battery pack weighed almost as much as Koda, he grinned, not quite but almost. He took the M-60 and as much ammo as he could carry for both weapons. He met Koda in the front room and slipped on his cap and sunglasses.

"Right let's get going, it should be three days' travel, two if we did not have to move carefully."

Koda laughed at him. She was sure it wasn't her or the clothes, but the thought of her kicking ass that was turning him on. "You're always sexy to me," she said on a breathy sigh as she picked up a flask of water and slipped it between her shin and boot. She was used to his forehead kisses and she didn't move as he left to get his own guns. When he came back she gave a low whistle. "Are you sure you can travel with all that? You look like a mini army by yourself."

Koda laughed at her own joke before things got serious. She turned to the door. "Which way. I'll run up an hour ahead and wait for you each time scouting or I'll leave you clues of anything odd if I have to keep going. I don't want any surprises on this mission of ours." Koda busily braided her hair than wrapped a knife at the end. She put it in a tight bun. If need be her hair would also be used as a weapon.

"I'm ready when you are John."

He gave her a grin,

"I can carry it, but I have a feeling we will use it."

He pulled a map closer and started pointing out a trail that he had planned already.

"You follow this trail, it goes along a range of hills, it is a secluded spot so watch yourself, sixty minutes is a long time with those fuckers on your trail."

He ran his finger along another route,

"Here you stop, I'll get you there if all goes well, just remember that no matter what, you do not let any one get between you and an open route to me OK?"

Koda leaned over as he pulled out the map. She followed his finger as he pointed out the trail. It wasn't too hard a pretty much straight shot. She knew the terrain and she felt confident she wouldn't get lost. She watched as he showed her another route if things went wrong. She also committed that one to memory. Squaring her shoulders she was about to go out the door when his words stopped her. She smiled up at him and his concern. She kissed him soundly putting all the love and need she had for him into that kiss. "I won't. Don't you let anything get to you either. Noise attracts them and I have a feeling you'll be making a lot more noise than I will. Take care, John."

Koda gave John one last look before she slipped out of the house. She stayed with the shadows and the turrets recognizing her biopattern didn't move. She saw a few contams, but she stayed away from them. They didn't even turn to her. She started scouting ahead and she radioed to John there were 4 contams just out of the area walking. She felt as if she was being watched, but she couldn't prove it. Every time she glanced around she didn't see anything.

Koda started on the trail and every so often she would report in. Not only was this to relay information, but to reassure John she was alive and well. Also so that she could hear his voice as well. It was spooky on your own slipping past Contams instead of engaging them and it felt good to hear his deep rumble reassuring her. "John I'm ..." Koda cut herself off as a Contam slowly turned to her. It was odd the way he stared into the dark. She crouched low making herself as little as possible so he couldn't see her. The contam turned away and Koda felt it coming from behind. She pushed herself up, took 3 steps, ran up a tree, and flipped backwards causing herself to jump over the contam. He turned to look at her, she turned to look at him. "Oh fuck."

The contam smiled. He was the one that could think. The leader. The odd one. "What do you want," Koda asked knowing John could at least hear her side of the conversation.

The contam tilted his head in typical contam fashion. He wheezed in a breath before he slowly let it out. In the breath he managed to say "Revenge. Kill Pheonix. Fuck his girl." The smile became wider and Koda started to freak out. She should have engage, but she had a feeling she would lose this one.

"Fuck," she turned and ran.

Oh he knew something was terribly wrong, but he could not rush, he knew that he was being watched and he actively hunted the watchers, finding smart Contams. They of course died, but they kept him busy as he listened to Koda's words, then he heard the wheezing growl and he frowned, they knew that he was coming. That did not bode good, he quickly set up his M60, got the ammo ready and waited, shortly he saw Koda approaching. Of course no Contam came rushing after her, but they didn't need to, he knew they were there. The fuckers were getting even smarter, but experienced trumped smarts any day. He waited for Koda to reach him and called her to a halt with a soft call, he motioned her closer to him and he crouched.

"We are in serious shit now, but nothing we can't beat."

Koda ran as fast as she could. That smart one gave her the creeps. She also had a feeling he was like a side mission. Something was amiss and she had to get back to John. She heard a growl and she dove to her left, tucked, rolled, and came up. A contam, a normal one, had rushed her, but now was coming back. Koda slowly pulled out her sword and in an even motion she side stepped and cut him in the cut bringing her knife up to make sure he stayed down. Koda held the post for a second looking down at the contam making sure he really didn't move when she heard a few more growls.

4 of them were barreling down on her. She pulled out two stars and threw them. They landing in the contam's eyes on the far left. She ducked as one swung at her and cut the knees of the other before stabbing down severing his head from his body. She came back up and swung her sword in an arch cutting the torso of the eyeless one before kicking another backwards. She managed to backpeddle and thrust her sword into the 3rd chest before coming back and killing the last two. She felt as if someone was looking at her and she turned her head to see Creepy McGee watching her; that scary twisted smile still in place. She ran again.

Koda had never been happier to see John. It seemed John felt the same way about something being amiss and she crouched beside and slightly behind him so she wouldn't be in his line of fire. "Had any enemies or someone who held a serious grudge against you?"

John Collins

"Grudge? Not that I can recall."

He scanned the area and a few Contams met the end of their unatural lives as metal tore through their heads.

"I do have a bit of a lead on who is conducting the experiments on the new Contams. Dr Ian Mathews, he was under contract with the military trying to create a super soldier. I along with quite a few of the top brass did not agree with his methods nor his results as it seemed that he had become a bit mad trying to play god."

He killed a Contam with a headshot,

"His subjects became stronger and faster, but instead of intelligence they became savage. So he was let go and monitored to prevent him from continueing his research. That is all I know about the man, but if he holds a grudge against me personally I really don't know."

He could feel the trap closing in on them,

"Koda, they would expect us to fall back, when I run, stay as close as you can, we're going forward."

Koda listened. She stayed behind John and called out directions when Contams were coming at them. He had the long rang weapons. She had the hand to hand. She was no good in this fight and when the Contams came closer than she liked she would throw a knife or a star into their eyes knocking them down or if she threw hard enough knowing them out for good. It was a good system and it gave them enough leeway for John to tell her some of his history.

"I understand, but the smart one. He seems to have something personally against you. Like he fought through his Contam whatever to remember you and want you down. I think this is like something different. I think ..." Koda couldn't explain and John cut her off. The urgency in his voice made her push that thought aside and she nodded her head.

"Okay. I'll take the lead. Just tell me which way. I can handle anything that comes near us except that smart one. He freaks me out." Koda waited a moment and John moved. He was fast, but not as fast with all that equipement on him. she heard a few shots from his gun and Koda was right beside him. She knew this wasn't going to work so she lengthen her strides and pulled ahead. She ran up a small hill and looked down.

"10 contams. Going in."

John Collins

He crested the hill as she met the first ones, he lifted the machine gun and killed seven, leaving her to deal with the other three as they were too close to her anyway. He kept running, glancing over his shoulder at the pursuers, he could clearly make out the smart from the dumb. The smart ones using cover as much as possible, the others just running, by the time he reached Koda the other three lay dead on the ground.

"Move!"

He turned and fired until the last of the dumb followers were dead, the others he could dispatch as they went along. The sun was starting to fade and he rushed after Koda, his gear dragging him down, but they would need it so he kept it. He saw the cave he had in mind and gave a sharp whistle to draw Koda's attention and then pointed at the cave he wanted to use. It was not the best cover, but easier defend-able than the open ground.

Bullets whizzed by Koda's head, but she trusted John. She saw bodies dropped as she jumped up and planted both feet on a contam's chest sending him flying through the air. She landed with a thud on the ground and kicked out the feet of the nearest one before planting her knife into his eye. She pulled out the knife and threw it into the head of the next one before pulling out her sword and stabbing the contam who was now trying to get to his feet in the chest. She retrieved her weapons and wiped them off on their clothes.

John just made it to her and his order had her sprinting ahead. It was easy to slice and run past the contams as they made her way. Koda was ahead, but not too far. She didn't want to leave John behind, but clear a path for him. A whistle had her glancing back at him and she saw him correct his course. Koda got it and ran towards the cave. She entered into the pitch blackness and stopped momentarily letting her eyes get used to the dark. The cave wasn't deep and it had no other entrances that she could see. The important part it was empty.

"Clear."

Koda moved back to the front to John pulled a pistol off him, knelt, and began taking aim. She cleared out a few and it seemed the usual contams were down. The smarter ones were out there, but she couldn't see them. Just feel them. But in the fading darkness that lone one was standing there. Watching them. Too far to take aim and hit.

John Collins

He settled down the pack with the ammunition and the gatling gun, he did not have much left for the M-60, but he was sure that he could make it to the base, there he could restock and maybe see if one of those fucking tanks didn't still work. He flipped open the M-60's bipod and placed it down on the ground, next he pulled out a camera and mounted it on a tripod, attaching a cord to it, he pulled a mechanism out of the gatling gun's bag and attached it to the M-60, he connected the cable to it and pressed a switch, first nothing happened and then with a soft whirr the gun started to move from side to side, then the camera and then they started to synch. He sat back and grinned at Koda,

"Just don't walk into it's range, it's not programmed, just a dumb follow and kill program. It shoots at any movement it can detect."

He pulled out rations and handed her ration to her and pulled out water bags as well,

"Time to change our plans, these fuckers knows where we are going that is for sure. They never come into these hills, something tipped them off, maybe they had some sort of surveillance up that I over looked..."

He frowned,

"That little misstep can get us killed, I really should have made a better effort of gathering information."

Koda covered John as he worked. She wasn't sure what he was doing, but she trusted him. Hell, she trusted him with her life long before this and she wasn't going to stop now. Another clip was empty and she ejected it even as she was bringing up another to take it's place. She moved the gun back and forth seeing it was clear for now. John sat back and Koda followed his lead. He glanced at his silly grin and fell down upon him kissing him hard.

She took the ration and water and nodded. This was too precise for it to be random contams. "No, I don't think it's your fault. That's what I've been trying to tell you. There's this really smart one and he talked to me. I don't know why he dislikes you, but he wants to kill you and hurt what's yours." She wasn't going to mention the thing saying he wanted to rape her and kill her in the process. No sense in being melodramatic. They didn't need that here.

"I think they already know we're coming. We can't abort. So what we should do is go in guns blazing. No use doing the sneak attack. Won't work. Take them all out one by one and put a bullet in that creepy contams head and one in the doctor who created him."

John Collins

"Yeah I guess you are right, funnily enough I have a stash of weapons here as well, I'm pretty sure they have not gotten to it yet. Heck I think I'll struggle to find it..."

The M-60 chattered and two Contams fell dead, they were some way off and that had to give them warning.

"myself. You know what I think? I think he's the oldest of them, did you notice that their tactics seemed to evolve after some time? I think they get their smarts back..."

Again the gun fired,

"after some time and of course that injection into the neck. So once we get better weapons for you, we go all gung ho on their asses. What I wouldn't give for a SBS team now, heck even some Spetznas would be welcome."

He gave her a warm smile,

"But I have you and together we make quite a team."

"Weapons?" Koda went back to searching the cave. He must have camouflaged it as she hadn't seen it the first time she swept the cave. There were just rocks. Koda went closer to the rocks and found the pack. She should have known. Switching some of the melee gear for long distance killing was easy. She basically took pistols and ammo while keeping her throwing stars and knives. She would leave the big stuff to John.

"Hmm is it smarts or is it a new animal need to kill?" Koda wasn't sure if they were smarter or were now more animalistic. Either way they still wanted to kill.

"I think we should take a rest. Especially you..." The gun went off.

"...you were carrying a lot of weapons there. We're safe for now." Koda went and checked the magazine on the mini gun. It should be fun and last at least another 15 minutes if the contams keep testing their boundaries. Koda turned back to John and smiled. "Yeah. We do."

John Collins

"Oh its smarts alright, just look at them, herding the stupid Contams into positions that will test our defense. Its very secure that I can assure you, it covers the entire entrance..."

He looked as she handled the minigun,

"And don't use that baby just yet, I want to keep it as secret as possible, they should not know I have it, until its too late."

He got an assault rifle from the crate and loaded up on ammo, then a thought struck him and he had to grin as he found it quite amusing.

Koda nodded and went to sit next to John. She would think about the smart contams later. Right now they were on a mission and that was to storm the base. Just as soon as John got a good rest. Koda finished off her rations and water as she waited the whir of the gun in the background. She glanced at John. "What's so funny?" She couldn't think of anything that would be hillarious in this situation. They were surrounded by Contams, some of them were smart, a really creepy one was stalking them, they had limited weapons, and were still on their way to a base to find a scientist or something that was fucking with contams head. A movie plot for sure.

Koda nodded her head as she inwardly thought. She was psyching herself up. "Okay. Let's move. I'm ready are you?" She started strategically moving weapons on her person. She was still traveling light, but was a bit more weighed down to carry the guns and ammo.

John Collins

"Oh just thinking what our friends would think when a few moans and groans of pleasure came from the cave instead of weapon fire."

He nodded that he was ready and broke the mini gun up again, then he broke up the scanning equipment and picked up the M-60. He did not like the silence, this was another trap, these traps really started to tire him out now.

Koda perked up. She would love to do that. Something about the adrenaline, the gun bursts, this may be her last night on earth had her worked up and she was ready to go. Unfortunately, they were joking and teasing and were breaking down weapons and building them back up. Fuck, now she was horny with no outlet.

Koda stood at the entrance with John at her back. "Quiet. A little too quiet." She smiled turning so that she could still see with her peripheral vision even as she looked at John. "How about we put that cool gun back up and see if we can make the cave vibrate with my screams. We'll finish this in the morning. They know we're coming and I would really like to 'cum'." She waggled her eyebrows.

John Collins

He grinned at her,

"I like your plan, but we are taking a detour and I promise you that you will be screaming much sooner than you think. Come on let's go."

He lead her away from the original trail, he had another plan and while the Contams may have gotten smarter, they stayed animalistic. Some how they picked up that Shaundi was or had been horny and they came out of hiding. This of course gave them firing practice on the run. A few clicks to the South-West was a small compound, it must have been some sort of repair base. John knew that there was a working tank and inside of it he knew that he could finish what his banter had started.

Koda liked the grin. Her words did what they were intended. They put him and ultimately her at ease. Something to lighten the mood. It was still a bit eerily quiet, but seeing that smile and them joking made her more confident in the situation. Koda's eyebrows quirked up when he mentioned she'll be 'screaming' soon enough. She knew he meant sex, but it sounded like an omen to her.

They exited the cave and Koda stayed by John's side as they ran. It was how this trip should have been. A few contams, a few bullets, nothing special. That real smart one was gone - thank goodness. Koda saw buildings and realized they were heading towards it. She pulled ahead and scout it out. It was mostly empty except for a few contams that she took care of easily. She was just rechambering another round into her gun when John came up behind her. She turned and cocked the gun her finger a second from pulling the trigger when she realized it was him. Immediately her hand dropped down and her eyes begged forgiveness.

"I'm assuming we're going to use this bad boy. I'm going to see if there's any gas or other supplies we can use." Koda took off at a soft jog to what looked like a warehouse.

John Collins

He grinned at her,

"So I guess that was payback?"

He chuckled and moved on, he did not allow things like that to bother him, she did not mean to shoot him, if she did, he would be dead. He followed her as she hunted for gas and whatever supplies she had in mind. He kept his gun ready, he could see the hidden Contams, but knew that unless he allowed them to spring the trap, there would be no clear indication of just how many there was. He caught up with her and spoke her name softly,

"Koda...we have multiple bogies all over the place. They are the smart ones as they are concealed much too well to be the normals."

He looked past her as he spoke, then looked down at her,

"Don't look around to try and see them, just look for what you need, I'll stick around to make sure they do not seperate us."

Koda smiled at his light hearted attempt at joking with her. She was still a little nervous about almost killing John. Koda was so worried and in her own mind about the fact that if she hadn't paid attention, if her mind hadn't focused, John would be on the ground dead. She almost killed the only rational male left on this planet. Plus, she was sure she loved him. How do you kill your lover.

Koda's head whipped up when John spoke. She hadn't noticed anything, but if John said he did than she trusted him. She needed to keep her head in the game. Dammit, she was messing up. Koda continued looking acting as if John hadn't given her a warning though her trigger finger was on the gun ready to come up and use in an instant. "There's no gas here. No rations either. But..."

Koda looked down. There was a room with a ladder leading down. A light switch still worked. There didn't seem to be anything down there from what you could see from standing there. But it was the best place for rations and gas. She looked at John. "Who goes down there first? Me or you?"

John Collins

He peeked down into the gloom, why didn't he bring a flashlight? Oh yes he didn't think that some Contam would have a personal beef with him.

"You can go first, high alert, half time. I'd rather take another day than bury you OK?"

He knew that she knew exactly what he meant. He took up a position at the entrance that gave him a 300 degree view, nodding at her, he watched her move down the ladder. This stunk and he did not trust the silence especially when knowing that they are being watched. He noticed that the door could close over the hole, it took a few well aimed kicks and a lot of muscle power to break it from its hinges. While keeping a watch he booby trapped the door, if it was picked up or moved a nasty explosion would kill quite a few of the enemies. After he finished, he took up his position, waiting for Koda to clear the ladder to allow him to get down.
