RIP Sean Connery

“Kepeät mullat”, as we say around here.

If I would get to choose how I die, at ninety in my sleep would be high on the list, if not at the very top.

Agreed.
Now the Lord has a new agent. . . .

One can imagine a certain trilby-style fedora landing on the hat stand in God's waiting room...

I gather that his last year or two was clouded with dementia (don't know if it was Alzheimer's). It's sad when the mind goes before the body does.

As for his wife-slapping, I'm told that he finally fessed up to it being a bad thing. But by that time, he had pretty much slipped from the public eye and it wasn't given much attention.

A great Scot despite his flaws

It is sad the passing of one of Scotland’s best loved sons.

For me still the best Bond though Daniel Craig came closest to emulate the raw power and danger that Connery’s bond exuded.

I admire despite his many acting roles he never tried to change his Scottish accent.

RIP

It sounded particularly odd in the role of a Russian submarine commander in Hunt for Red October, or when he played a Spaniard in Highlander.

He was such an appealing and charismatic actor that he could get away with it.

A real man's man

Loved him. Loved his movies. What a true hunk of a guy he was.

There have been some other guys that have done Bond well but there have also been some wimpy "Bonds." I don't think Sean grew up eating soy protein.

According to the obituary I read, he did go to great lengths to tone the accent down. He was in the Mr. Universe competitions at one point, and, because of the gibberish he spoke, they marked him as being Polish.

Yes highlander in particular where it was the Frenchman who played the highlander. Must have been funny in casting.

One of the most strangely cast movies ever, from an accent point of view.

French actor Christopher Lambert didn't even make an attempt to sound like a Scot, though his character was born and lived in Scotland for much of his life. He sounded obviously French throughout the movie. Everytime he said his name "McLeod" one's response was a sarcastic, "Right!"

Connery with his Scottish brogue playing Spaniard Ramirez.

Clancy Brown with his completely American accent playing the Kurgan, apparently from Russia.

I had no idea! I looked it up and saw the photos, and he looked darn good, although he was nowhere near big enough to have been competitive in the 1970s. You can see how the standards evolved.

"Mr. Connery, we'd like to cast you in a movie called 'Highlander' where everyone is Scottish--"

"Oh, good!"

"--except for you. You'll be playing a 16th century Spanish nobleman, who's actually an ancient Egyptian prince who trained in Japan."

"Hmph... I'll have to work on that."
