CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - Sally Ride, the first U.S. woman to travel into space, died on Monday after a 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer, according to her organization, Sally Ride Science. She was 61.

I met her at a museum in Washington a number of years ago. I was impressed.

I remember the cries of "Ride Sally Ride" from hundreds of women's throats when Sally lifted off from the cape and into history. A true pioneer in more ways than one. RIP, Sally.
