From here:

Neil Armstrong was a quiet, self-described nerdy engineer who became a global hero when as a steely-nerved pilot he made "one giant leap for mankind" with a small step onto the moon. The modest man, who had people on Earth entranced and awed from almost a quarter-million miles away, died Saturday. He was 82.
Thank you, Neil, for taking that giant leap for all of us. :rose:

If you've never read it, do yourself a favor and read it before you die:

The Right Stuff
by Tom Wolfe

Shut up and die like an aviator.

I will have to tell Mr Penn when he gets back from his concert, if he doesn't know already. Sad to see him go, but a more accomplished life than most.

Wow! I guess it was going to happen eventually.
Watching the moon landing on a fuzzy, black and white screen is one of my earliest memories. It didn't seem so much like an American accomplishment; it was more like a human accomplishment - that is it seemed to be a world-changing event. I remember being told, "watch this, it's important." And that was up here in Canada!

"High Flight"

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
- Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Rest in Peace, Neil

He was a great man, one of my lifelong heroes. I'm in kind of a state of shock right now that actually he's gone. It is nice to see the Literotica community pausing to recognize him.
