Posting this here so I don't have to explain it to everyone individually.

Lil Girl was my older beagle. She never got along with Sierra, the biggest and most dominant of my 3 German Shepherds. They were constantly fighting and Lil Girl, being half the size, always got the worst end. Sierra is a rescue dog and is unpredictable; she sent Lil Girl to the vet on a couple of different occasions.

Well, a few days ago I pulled Sierra off Lil Girl again. I had her by the collar and she wouldn't let go until I dumped a bucket of ice cold water on them. While she was doing this, my more submissive shepherd Scarlett joined in, nipping and growling at Lil Girl while Sierra shook her back and forth. Lil Girl was not injured in this encounter. Sierra is the pack leader, so Scarlett always does what she does. They usually only do this when I'm around because Sierra is so jealous of Lil Girl getting attention from me, the alpha male.

Last night I went out to feed the dogs. Lil Girl was in her house. She hangs out there a lot and Sierra usually doesn't bother her. Lil Girl did not come out of the house to dance around and get her food. She barely moved. I touched her and she moved - but I could tell by the look in her eyes something was wrong. They were all glassy and staring. It was dark, so I reached in to touch her side and found it stiff with blood.

I ran in the house and got my boyfriend. We wrapped Lil Girl in a sheet and carried her to the car. We couldn't yet see how bad it was, until we got to the emergency vet clinic, then we saw the extent of her injuries. The vet told us Lil Girl didn't have much chance of surviving. She'd been attacked by at least two dogs, with deep injuries on her belly, neck and legs, and much lost blood.

We opted to put her down. My boyfriend had to leave the room; he's had Lil Girl for 9 years since she was a puppy. I stayed and held her paws and talked to her while they injected her and she went to sleep.

I don't believe in an afterlife for people but I like to believe that Lil Girl is in the Happy Hunting Grounds with Spanky, our beagle who died of cancer over a year ago, chasing squirrles, digging holes, and enjoying an endless supply of treats.

My sympathies Carson...it is tough to lose one you love and have had good times with. You and your friend will be in my meditations tonight. :rose:

I wish I could send more than just sympathy.

thanks, but I've already got an extra beagle ;)

It's my BF who's taking it hard. I freaked out and almost passed out last night, but I'm okay now.

Losing pets is the price we pay for having them to love.

My condolences Carson. I'm sure all animals go someplace where they can run free and be happy for all eternity.

My condolences and sympathies Carson. I'm going to go pet my cats for a while now.

All too true, Carson. If your boyfriend hasn't read it already, might I recommend "The Rainbow Bridge?" It's rather sappy, but it keeps me hoping that when the time comes for Stormdog, I'll be saying au revoir instead of goodbye.

Exactly what I was thinking. :)

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Very sappy, but comforting, anyway.

My sympathies, Carson. :rose:

I'm so sorry, sweets. Pets are family and it hurts just as much when they leave us. :(

:rose: :rose: :rose: for you and the rest of the Carson and SO family.

Thanks, by the way, to everyone who's been kind enough to either talk about it or let me NOT talk about it.

That has made me cry. I'm redoubling my condolences to you Carson, cause I kno exactly how you're feeling.

To L'il Girl and Basil. Let's hope they're waiting there for us.

The Earl

My condolances Carson..

I have a question about that rainbow bridge thing... What if your pet is waiting for you there and you go to hell? I mean.. wouldn't that kinda make it so your pet was in limbo forever?

-Tolyk, not trying to stir shit, just frankly curious :) (Seeing as how I don't believe in heaven nor hell)

Hey, Carson,

As a dog-lover I sympathise. I've outlived three dogs. I was close to them, specially the last one.

In a funny way it's important to be reminded of how truly animal so-called domesticated dogs are. German Shepherds used to be taken in by the police by law once they reached 12 years old in the UK. They can get a little crazed sometimes. It's a shame they took it out on your poor beagle.

Oh, I am so sorry, honey, and for bf too. I know this is the worst thing that could happen right now. Love ya.

The one I have that I've raised since a puppy is perfect. I would trust him with any dog. The other two we found/adopted as grown dogs and we don't know how they were brought up. I was raised on a farm and therefore I always remember that dogs are animals. They live by instinct no matter how we try to humanize them.

This is so true. I've lost many pets over the years and every one has left a mark on my heart.

It's a high price to pay, but the joy out weighs the pain. :rose:
