RIP Gordon Lightfoot

RIP Gordon. They dont make song writers like him anymore. Ones that do write, just copy material from other artists.

He definitely was a legend. Beautiful has to be one of the most touching love songs ever written.

This is another one of those "disappearing childhood" moments, because I remember his music from when I was becoming musically conscious, in the 1970s. Part of the soundtrack of my youth. He has a nice, distinctive sound and voice. I miss that kind of music. I can think of no equivalent to him these days (there I go, sounding old again).

Yes, a legend. Yesterday was the 36th anniversary of our first date, and only with this sad news did my wife and I realize both of us were fans. She had Sundown going in her head all day. Edmund Fitzgerald was my earworm.

RIP Mr. Lightfoot

We saw him in concert not that long ago in Madison, WI. Six or so years ago, maybe? He was AMAZING, just tear-jerking amazing. Smaller venue, so it felt as though we were in, say, a nightclub of the olden days. Nary a bad song was sung.

I was introduced to his music in 1970, by a pal who'd returned from Canada
bringing with him several LPs. My favourite ?

He's quite perceptive in his grasp of time. He goes from "pre-history" ("before the white man and the wheel"), to the people owning and planning these projects, to the people actually doing the work. At the end, it's completed, it seemed inevitable perhaps, and there are both benefits and costs to be paid, depending on where you are in the social system that created it.

Toronto is considering changing the name of Yonge-Dundas Square to Gordon Lightfoot Square in his honor. It's right in downtown Toronto, not far from Massey Hall where he performed over 170 times. It would be quite a fitting, and well-deserved tribute.

I had no clue who he was until I went to Boot Camp. A guy there kept talking about Gordon Lightfoot and couldn't believe I didn't know who he was. When I got back home (reserves) I went to Walmart and bought his CD (yes, it was that long ago) and was instantly amazed. He was awesome. Singer songwriter who was truly talented.
