Ok I tried to figure out the Library sticky but didn't have much luck.
So I kinda gave up and decided to post here, if I screwed up feel free to point me in the right direction.

My question is this.. Are Cock Rings safe?

What should a newbie user know about using one?

apparently you shouldnt leave it on for more then twenty minutes

Try also using the "Search" function. There is a button for it in the upper right corner of the screen.

The first, most important rule of cock rings is to use adjustable ones-- no solid metal rings! Once you're hard, it can be nearly impossible to remove without help from the emergency room. (Your cock will not become flaccid while wearing it.)

Maybe the people in the BDSM forums would know more about cock rings and toys of that nature?

LOL actually College Geek I posted there first and they suggested I post here.

Really? Go figure! The few times I've posted there, they've known a lot more about that stuff than anyone else.

Either way, I'd like to think that there would be instructions or warnings with the cock ring if there was a danger. It's better to be safe than sorry though, eh?

I figure it's best to educate myself as much as possible before I even think about trying this College Geek.

Well lets consider it logically...

The ring is designed to maintain an erection by preventing the flow of blood out of the penis. Some go a step further and also prevent ejaculation entirely.

Good Idea? Over the short time, maybe. Long time? NO WAY.

This is a specialized tourniquet. If kept on for too long you can cause yourself serious damage. Tourniquets are usually only used in extreme, life threatening, emergencies, of which, sex, isn't considered to be.

It is not suggested that you plan on hours of use unless you're interested in a case of gangrene on your penis. :p

Bob, while the concept of 'specialized tourniquet' make be technically accurate, it sounds unnecessarily alarming. Add in the gangrene and I hope you're :Ding.

Nightbird, there's nothing wrong with trying/using a cock ring. You've got the two main pieces of advise you need here. Dr. Sue Johanson says don't leave them on more than 20 minutes...the idea of an adjustable one (either like the leather ones that unsnap or a plastic stretchy one) to start is a good idea....and it goes on before you get really hard. Enjoy!

Actually I was only partially joking WW. There have been a few posts here concerning rings and people asking how many hours they could wear it. 20 minutes sounds about right. Beyond that, I would suggest an easily adjustable one that could be adjusted on a regular basis to allow the blood to flow.

I think it's a matter of context. If somebody were asking about cock rings in the sense of "how long can I leave them on my sub male while he's tied up blah blah" then people at BDSM Talk would be happy to answer that. When it's just a generic question, though, we sometimes feel like people are assuming that kinky = toys. Which it can, but not always: it's much more a matter of human interactions. So when it's just a general toy question not being asked in a BDSM context, we often will recommend people ask here as well. s'lara did a great job answering this question over there though. :)

Of course I speak for myself!

I hear you...I read somewhere...don't know if it was here ...about a guy saying he left it on all night...like he forgot to take it off! I'm not a guy but I can't see that doing any good....luckily he said it didn't have any negative effect.

you've got it right, and its totally fair to any poster old or new. Though, sometimes people get confused :) Which is what we're here for.

I'll update the manual to include cockrings, though I think there is one in there, I'm updating it tomorrow there have been some lose ends and a few good threads to be put in from the past two months.

Cock rings are not tourniquets. They go around the cock and balls and shouldn't be elastic (e.g. rubber bands) which would cut off cirulation. They're typically leather or even metal and increase stimulation. But they should not keep you from cumming, nor from losing your erection.

I agree - do a search; there are a number of informative threads on Lit.

there is a cock ring that is elasticized but not elastic - I think its something like the material non-latex condoms are made from - that also works as a french tickler. It worked great. He could put it on various parts of his cock and could tease different parts of me... Up high for deep teasing, down low for clit only.

I wouldn't trust metal cock rings. You'd have to go to a hospital to get them pried off whereas the elastic type ones I described above can be cut off.

But elastic themselves??? UGH! no nonononono!

also: ever try hair claws? *evil grin*

Well thank you everyone this has been very informative.

I think maybe I was misunderstood a little though..

Etiole I in no way meant to be critical of the information I got from S'Lara and I DID not post my question in BDSM because of the "Kink" connotation that you mentioned. I did it because I thought that was the best place to have my questioned answered as I could see it being used by Dommes on thier subs etc. Your right though I need to think harder about how I word my questions and which Forum I am placing it in.

Slvrtongue I DID do a search and tried the stickies.. I had no luck. Maybe I did something wrong.

Actually Nightbird, I think you misunderstood me! I was primarily responding to College_geek's comment, I wasn't speaking about your post specifically. I think it's perfectly reasonable for you to post this question in both places. You handled s'lara's answer very well.

do not use metal cockrings. bad idea unless you've been using them for a long long time.

try using a scrunchie, soft, elastic and you can cut if off in an emergency.

Don't leave it on for more then a half hour.
