rifftrax really isn't that bad.

Okay, see, this is the stuff I was wondering. Maybe that link you gave me isn't what I really want, math/logic/theory based guy that I am. Maybe what I need is a chord tutorial, like the above, but starting with some basics. Remember, I'm a primarily single-note instrument guy. Your post I've quoted is just a little too advanced, I think. It might help if I had something like a rubric that started with "C major is these three notes, because a major chord is the following three intervals. Then C minor is this, because 'minor' means the middle note is a half step lower." Etc.
Do you remember when I told you you were asking a more complicated question than you realized? Now you see why.

That link will build a diminished chord for you, if you want one built. You can play it when you want one in a song. But if you want to devise a chord--create it based on an understanding of how the notes in chords are selected--you're going to need to learn scales (or at the very least, the concept behind scales). That does take a little time.

Major chords and minor chords differ by that middle note, that much is true.

But, no, it won't. "dim" is not one of the drop down options.

Scales, I get. I've played/practiced them for ages now. However, transitioning from playing them on the trumpet to building chords off them is a challenge, and the reason is that while I know that, say, F means B flat, I have no idea what "F dim" means.

Ah, crappity. Believe it or not, I knew that. Thanks for the reminder.

Oh, to live in a city where that might happen. I'll look into the DVDs, but...

A few years back I saw YouYube clips of Joel and the gang doing cinematic titanic. I didn't forget about it, I just forgot they called it cinematic titanic. At the time, I got the distinct impression that, unlike Rifftrax, there's something missing unless you see cinematic titanic live, so I just didn't look into it further.

Have you or phrodes seen it live? Are the DVDs really worth it?

Ellie

nope.i live in the middle of nowhere. we have a hard time just getting decent movies here. most live shows that come through here are generally terrible and uninteresting. shit, last "big" band that past through this town was the fucking verve pipe and it's been like ten years since anyone gave a shit about them.

Well I'll be (re: the dim chord).

The good news is, if you get scales, you get chords.

This is a text version of something that MUST have a graphic resource or a thousand somewhere online. See if it helps, and if I can, I'll poke around for something less tl;dr: http://www.museweb.com/ag/chord_form.html

I'll read it. I think it's the sort of education I've been lacking, from a quick look. But thank you, in any case. I know that what I'm doing by asking you these questions is essentially asking for your hard-won expertise for free, and I appreciate that you've been patient and forthcoming. Now give me a bunch of struggling young artist's performances for free.

that's awesome guys. i'm sure there's some dumb reason for this, but since i don't spend twenty hours a day here i don't really care.

I like 'em both. They've helped ease my pain over MST3K's demise.

Not sure which I like better. I always kinda leaned more toward Joel as host on MST3K, with Mike showing up as Torgo or Steve Reeves or that sorta thing. I just liked having them both on the show. I guess it's cool that they're both still out there for my amusement.

word, but i do have to say that i like rifftrax a little bit if only because they do more current movies. it's sad the fuckers go work together, but apparently there's some weird issue between them all. joel alluded to it once in an interview i read, but he wouldn't elaborate because he's not a dick.

except when it comes to gallagher.

Sorry, I imagine there's a lot more to say about how each half of the MST3K team is still doing the same thing now, and how those things have two different names. Don't let us stop you. Say all the rest!

You were saying that you're pissed that we helped your flimsy little thread onto a second page?

I have seen them perform live. They showed us, "War of the Insects".

It's not that it changes a chord, it's that it is a chord. To build it, allow 1.5 steps between each note (A dim = A, C, Eb, Gb).

By the way, a bit of math/logic might have led you to discover this, but because there are 1.5 steps between each note, and because the notes are equally spaced, there are really only three diminished chords/scales.

Think of the one you just built on A. Go up a half step and you'd build another on Bb. Go up another half step and you'd build yet a third on B.

Now your next half-step up will lead you to C. C dim = C, Eb, Gb, A. Look back up at the A dim notes and you'll see they're all the same, the only change is the A is on top now (which is not really a change).

But D minor is the saddest key.

umm, no. the jokes are mst3k. the puppets were just relics from joel's days as a prop comic.

That's like saying The Muppet Show would have been just as brilliant without Muppets. It wouldn't, we could just call it Saturday Night Live and be done with it.

Or Flying Circus without Terry Gilliam. Just the "Funny Walk and Fish Slap Hour" without him.

Sometimes the brilliance is not just what is delivered, but how it is delivered.

Fuck, I must have been exhausted last night. This is perfectly clear in the harsh light of the noon hour.

Aw, man. I'm jealous.

Why on earth would one want to watch MST3K without the puppets? The puppets are MST3K.

Nope, bad analogies. MST3K was, what? Five minutes of puppet gimmick, and and hour and half of the boys riffing on movies.

It was the movie jokes that were the best part; there were only so many great Satellite o' Love gimmicks before that part of the show jumped the shark. The movie stuff never did.
