Any thoughts? The leather appeals to me on some visceral level, but the PVC seems more practical.

Leather requires more care, e.g., use of saddle soap to keep it flexible between uses. Also, leather should be used only on one person, or between one couple (in the case of switches), just for hygienic reasons. PVC can be cleaned with alcohol and other germicidal agents, most of which are damaging to leather.

At the same time, there is, at least for me, a certain satisfaction in using a formerly-living hide on a living hide...

As an equestrian, I find this offensive somehow. Like....like the Irish may find green Guinness to be offensive! It's just...it's just wrong

I love riding crops, everything about them. Actually, I love tack in all its forms and uses. And I had to google pvc crops, because I couldn't even imagine them. Am I right in thinking that it's just the handle that's pvc?

Personally, I worship our braided leather crop, with etched silver bands in the handle. It was purchased at an upscale tack shop, as a 20th anniversary present. But we also have a few cheap nylon crops as well.

I also love riding crops, and the way they can be used with precision, and varying levels of intensity. I've only owned leather ones myself.

Never seen a PVC one. We have leather. I absolutely love it!

There are a number of toy manufacturers who produce crops that *don't* use leather, including Pleasure Chest, which sells one they advertise as a *VEGAN* crop

I'm not sure that all the non-leather crops are PVC. They may be other types of plastics. I simply presumed that the OP was referring to non-leather when saying "PVC."

Yes, my last one died. It was the floppy leather kind, it did crack and break
Although I fell in love with a leather heart shaped one at a very nice adult store. It had metal studs in a heart shape, I bet it makes lovely red marks It was just before Valentines and I should have bought it but I thought it was expensive. I also thought I'd find it online, no luck. I should have followed my flea market shopping rule "if I'm still thinking about it later, just go buy it, if it's still there"

Sigh, I DO have to hit the tack store for my horse shampoo/conditioner I use on my hair.

Not a crop, but PVC actually makes a very nice flogger with a hefty sting. I know someone who used to make them out of PVC craft lace and hemp cord. They were fantastic.

Outdoor whipping with a crop!

Both my dominant girlfriend and I rode horses so using a crop on me was her weapon of choice. She wanted to have a full moon ritual whipping after a late night walk in our neighborhood. We went for a walk and I carried my best leather crop in my back pocket. People as we walked saw the crop but was not aware what we were going to do quite soon! The whole time walking I was fully aware of the whipping I was going to get making butterfly's in my belly sickening me as we walked! My gf chose an open area next to the Mission that had a adobe wall perfect for a whipping to hide us and partially block the sound of me crying out! I was to be whipped for the forgotten Chumash souls lost at the Mission. We stopped at the wall and my gf took the crop from my pocket ordering me to drop my pants and lift my shirt high. She took a bottle of coconut oil from her pocket and judiciously oiled my bare cheeks. The oil would help the skin from breaking and enable her to strike harder at the same time! Pushing me into the wall with her left hand forcibly in the small of my back she pushed her left knee behind the back of my knees to keep me from moving. Looking around for people the time was right and she let out a lightning barrage of a dozen stinging blows causing me to cry out taking my breath away making my cheeks on fire. I stood there several minutes in tears crying and totally surprised from the painful blows. My gf was showing no remorse and was actually proud of herself giving me such a painful whipping for the ritual. A small price to pay she told me!

Ditto...too many people pay far too much because they buy from the adult shop instead of a tack shop...and usually get a far inferior product as well.

I agree, why would you want to go to a sex shop to buy a riding crop? I recently bought a really heavy one (it would make a cart horse move) from a shop that was definately not a sex shop and my sub loves it.

Leather is my preference to use on my personal subs.

During Pro-Play I ALWAYS use toys that can be sterilized.

Small canes can also be used quite effectively, especially for getting to those hard-to-reach places ...
