I fear we'll never be able to get rid of them. Instead, we'll have to learn to live among them, listen to their crazy ideas and accept their strange behaviors.
Most of the time, they are benign, but unfortunately, a problem arises when some of the idiots become politically inclined and then affect the remainder of the population.

Attitudes of driving, walking, and consuming in Mexico and USA are quite different. In USA, warning notices abound because 'accidents' are thought preventable. In Mexico, any mishap is divine will. You didn't fuck up; the Lord just wanted you dead or disabled. This greatly simplifies the legal system. I'm not sure how idiocy levels are affected, but most surviving drivers in Mexico (except cabbies) are polite.

We hear talk of "Darwin award candidates" and "cleansing the genepool." Alas, life don't work that way. If stupidity were actually weeded out genetically, humanity would all be fucking geniuses by now. I've read that intelligence is 30% heritable. Thus, eliminating dummies before they breed won't matter; there's always another idiot.

You're talking about someone who is born with below average intelligence. These folks are often hardworking, polite individuals.
I'm referring to people who are born with average or above average intelligence who have an education and who behave like total assholes without a thought or care about those around them.

The word itself is a rather useless source of information. One person's idiot may be another person's genius.
As has been eluded to, someone who may not be the head of the class in academics, may very well be a genius with her art... the woman who loves sky-diving may be called foolish by the man who loves movies. So, who gets to define which 'idiots' are to be sent to the gas chambers?
To allow the lives, words and beliefs of others to become overly important to me is perhaps itself a prime example of foolish or stupid behavior? It's only when these actually pose a threat that one should take note and get involved, otherwise it's best to ignore and concentrate on more positive realities.
