Rhode Island 'almosts'

The new law includes a section that says no religious organization -- including some hospitals, cemeteries, schools and community centers -- or its employees may be required to treat as valid any civil union, providing a religious exemption "of unparalleled and alarming scope," (governor) Chafee said in a statement.

As a result, a civil union spouse could be denied the right to make medical decisions for his or her partner, access to health insurance benefits, property rights in adjoining burial plots or family memberships at some community centers. That could cause partners significant harm at critical moments in their lives, the governor said.

"This extraordinary exemption eviscerates the important rights that enacting a civil union law was meant to guarantee for same sex couples in the first place," Chafee said.

baby steps. Then you get kicked in the teeth. Then you take some more baby steps.

However, the opposing old die off and the Catholic Church loses both membership and influence and eventually it passes. Later than it should, but it will pass. Why, because getting kicked in the teeth makes people mad and then they fight back!

Yeah good old Little Rhody! Oh we are so doomed with Chafee. he maybe on the right path here but he is going to kill us in the long haul.

Maybe this "recognition of a religion" will be found to be unconstitutional. It does give churches, etc. rights other organizations do not have.

Excuse me, but we in the UK do not have same-sex "marriages", but we do have same-sex civil unions, which has the same effect in Law as a marriage (property after death, the Will, separation and divorce, property rights, etc.).
To read that piece, there's a difference in Rhode Island.
What's the difference in Law ?

It's depressing repeating it, I hope you don't mind a link:

Dont hold your breath BOX. If the guvmint can make religion embrace fags it can make you violate your principles too. I cant imagine that being a problem for you but the idea irks some folks.

Unhappily separation of church and state cuts both ways. Now if the church organizations that refuse to recognize state actions like "civil unions" stop seeking tax exemptions from the state, and their adherents renounce income tax deductions for religious contributions to such organizations, now that would be real separation of church and state.

But of course the truth is that "separate but equal" isn't equal. And "separation of church and state" should mean separation.

A church can practice any discrimination it pleases, in the name of religion. But it shouldn't benefit from privileged status while it does that.

It shouldn't get to lease public land for a dollar.

It should not be given public moneys for public services whilst it denies those services to portions of the public.

Duh.
