Ok, firstly I'm not sure if this belongs here in general but I didn't see a good fit on the other forums, so sorry if this is out of place. Secondly I just want to say I am a huge fan of this site, I have been for over a decade reading various stories in a wide variety of categories and have found many enjoyable reads.

That said, I've always felt that the tagging system on literotica was woefully under developed and not used up to its potential. Anyone who has browsed other erotic literature, amateur writing, fan fiction etc etc sites have seen first hand how useful tags can be, and in some cases how they can be implimented helpfully to both the reader (allowing them to know exactly what they are getting into) and the author (attracting their target audience much easier).

Let's be frank, there is a ton of overlap on the literotica category system. You can read a bdsm story that is more romantic than 90% of the romance category. You can read a science fiction story that is entirely about group anal sex between shemales. Categories are rough, but they serve a needed purpose. Tags should be what's used to smooth out the roughness of categories. As it stands though, a reader can't even see a stories tags unless he scrolls to the bottom of a stories last page. Hidden behind clicks and scrolling, tucked away to the side like some shameful family relation no one wants to acknowledge during thanksgiving. (Though perhaps you braved literoticas search system and where revealed one of the stories tags! That is also a facet of this site that is in dire need of some tlc, but that is for another time.)

Even then, because so little emphasis is placed on the system most authors simply just put the barebones in there. Hello incest tag on a story labeled "Brother fucks sister" in the incest category! (Pulled that out of my ass, apologies if it seems condescending to any actual story or author). Or worse, they completely neglect major departures from the established story direction in the tags (The touching love story in the romance category between two heterosexual humans is thrown into chaos when out of left field the author dedicates the entirety of chapter three to rape in an attempt to interject drama and intrigue! But failed to ever hint, lead up to, mention or in any way indicate the touching love story was about to turn into a rape filled dark depressing spiral of despair. Alas, if only there were prominently used and displayed tags to warn those readers with delicate sensibilities...).

For me personally I have some specifics that I like to avoid such as rape, cuckolding and cheating. Nothing is worse to me then starting a long story in some category, becoming emotionally invested in the characters, only to have one of these bombshells dropped. No warning to the reader as the tags are hidden away. Hell, half the time these things aren't even included in that stories tags. (thank you to this authors who preface such chapters with their warnings, you do us readers a great service... You are doing the job tags should be doing though!). In the decade and a half I've been voraciously devouring content on this site, this situation has repeated itself over and over again much to my dismay.

What I propose is a complete overhaul of the tag system. Put them next to a stories title in shorthand (as is done in other sites) when browsing in categories. Put them underneath the stories title and above the authors name when you open a stories first page. Request that authors thoroughly tag their stories and even offer a checkbox system with the most commonly used tags so authors could see and quickly add relevant information to their titles. Be able to see a fantasy story tagged with NonCon, Rape, Mc, Nonhuman right on the category or first page front and center would tell me a lot more than the title Billy's Big Adventure.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I sincerely hope the site admins give this some thought. I understand it would be a large undertaking and take time to implement, but I think it would help the overall health of the site. It may seem like a minor thing, the exclusion of tags, but I must say it has adversely affected my reading enjoyment on this site and I've found, over time, that I've been spending more time on other sites that allow and encourage more transparent labeling of their stories. I mean, honestly, do you have any idea how hard it is to find a well written romantic love story in the science fiction or non human section of lit between two individuals without: group sex, sharing, swinging, rape or cheating? Seriously, who would have guessed that vanilla would become the rare flavor? I just want to get my freak on to something plain jane!.

I did not take the time to read this. But now, I can, should I have that time blocked out.

A site with over a half million stories in 35 different categories in every kink imaginable and for FREE!

Yet readers complain.

It's not unreasonable to suggest an improvement to website functionality. Tagging makes content easier to find. Readers' clicks and browsing also bring revenue to the site.

True, but if the reader knows what they're in the mood for go to that category then pay attention to the story title and tag line.

Title: Her Best Friend's Daughter

Tag line Karen helps her friend's daughter explore the softer sex.

Hmm, wonder what its about?

One thing lit could do is put the tags in front of the story when the person clicks on it, right now it shows up on the last page.

Another point is authors should have some consideration and if you're going to take an extreme kink like Incest or non consent or GM-which squicks a lot of people- ina story out of those categories, add a warning in the opening note. The reader can choose if they want to go forward and it saves the author a one bomb cause the reader is pissed.

They are claiming a lot of changes are coming this year we'll see.

I wasn't trying to have this post come across as a mindless complaint, simply trying to get some much needed improvements talked about and hopefully implemented, improvements that you do seem agreeable with and we have both come to similar conclusions as to how to deal with or implement them.

However, In regards to your example story title and description in an ideal world it would be that simple, but alas it is not. For all we know Karen is a dom who trains her friends daughter in spanking with her female sub. That sounds kinky, anyone got a story like that? Lol.

As far as kink shaming goes, none intended what so ever! I tried to come up with facetious or tongue in cheek examples in order to avoid that as much as possible, hah.

I was going to read one of those stories I hear about. But if the tags are fubar, I shant!

I don't think it's always true that a reader knows what they're in the mood for. I've wandered into the story side and meandered through a few different categories before finding a story that caught my eye. Tagging is a big part of how people search and utiize websites - pretty much expected by users, especially anyone 18-35.

It would be interesting to have the authors' tags separate from the readers' to see how each party views it.

I know laurel's mentioned the upgrade a few times. I'm sure they'll be no complaints and only sunshine and roses from the users upon completion. :D

well said

A well written and legitimate critique of this site. As an author here I have wished the story tags could be more 'up front' given the somewhat one-dimensional categories we are confined to post in. Many of our stories are based on personal experience, and span several categories Literotica allows us to chose to post (or otherwise redirects) our stories into.

The rare occasion I looked for story tags to search for a story to my liking or mood, it was like I had to dig for it. The next story (or stories) I submit, I am considering putting them in up front as part of the story text, just for the reasons you mention. Maybe someone is into group sex, but not into mmf or anal or whatever. Targeting your audience - even if that means only a few hundred as apposed to several thousand readers will bother to read your work - means that those that WANT to read the stuff you write will get there quick. And perhaps even more importantly, it allows that those that DON'T, the tools to avoid such topics before they get knee deep in them.

Thanks for putting that out there. Cheers, E.

I agree. Hopefully with the upgrades they're doing.

That is correct! :rose: In the first version of the redesign, the location of the tags will change, along with other improvements. Starting from there, we will be working towards a system where there will be reader-added tags and author-added tags, among other things. Tech stuff always takes longer than planned, but we are working on the upgrade literally every day for hours.

Please keep checking back, and feel free to PM me with any suggestions. :rose:

Glad this got moved to the AH. Looking forward to the tags coming forward and maybe expanding (with maybe the title and blurb fields allowing more characters). But as always, discussions like this make me feel that there are a lot of readers who need to stop needing babysitters and need not to hyperventilate at seeing something that goes beyond what they want to read and just take responsibility to switch out of it themselves and move on. I keep thinking they are on the wrong Web site if they can't take this responsibility for themselves and be less of a pantywaist about it.

The problem with that is trolls could put tags like "this story sucks"

That's a point. There also, unfortunately, are a whole lot of well-meaning but dense-as-a-rock-concerning-story-writing readers here--as well as the anal retentive prissy readers I mentioned in my post who will give moral judgment tags to stories on a wide-open porn site. Let's face it, being a discerning reader isn't a requirement here.
