Anna sighed as she sat in the library at her college campus. The table was full of books, papers, notebooks. Reading the sentence in front of her for what seemed like the hundredth time she finally marked the page and closed the book. 'It was months ago.' She thought to herself 'It's time to let it go, you have grades to worry about. It's time to stop pitying yourself.' She had known that it was a possibility that this would happen when he left but still she couldn't believe it had happened. As she fiddled with the ring on her left hand ring finger she couldn't help but think about him, how much she wished he was there right now.

Name: John Enfield
Staff Sergeant in the US Army's 82nd Airborne. He is 26 years old, 5'10" tall, tanned, lean and muscular. His hair is a short buzz-cut, and he has a few tattoos, none of which are fully visible when he's clothed. His eyes and hair are brown.

"I told you she would be in here studying!" came a familiar voice from behind Anna. "Hey, sis! Guess who called our house this morning, and it turns out that he's alive and well?"

She turned to see her sister, grinning like the Cheshire cat.

Behind her sister, wearing a dress uniform and a maroon beret, she saw a man that almost had to be a ghost. When John spoke, his deep, resonant voice made her feel as though no time had passed since he had gone missing in action in Afghanistan.

"Hey, gorgeous!" John said, wrapping his arms around Anna affectionately. "Your old phone number didn't work, so I called your parents. It's a long story how I ended up missing for six months, but I'm back and alive and well! You look amazing!" As his lips met Anna's, over a year of separation burst forth into deep emotion. Anna's sister kindly averted her gaze as John and Anna kissed unreservedly.

A few people in the library, though they didn't know the couple, could tell it was a reunion and began joining them in celebration by clapping. "I've missed you like crazy, Anna. I thought I'd never get to see you again." John was a tough man, but his voice still choked with emotion. "I love you so much!"

Anna just stood there in complete shock as she wrapped her arms tightly around him. She was afraid that if she let go he'd vanish into thin air.

Maybe she had called asleep as she was studying. That had to be it, none of this could be real. "I love you too..." She said softly, trying to hold back tears and failing. Slowly she let go of him , her mind still fighting over if this was real or just a fantasy.

John's hand moved to caress Anna's face, gently brushing the tears from her cheek. His eyes sparkled with joy at seeing his beloved fiancee again.

Anna's sister was smiling, a tear of joy trickling down her face. She clenched her hands in front of her, giddily dancing as she grinned at her sister. "I've gotten to spend the last 30 minutes with him after picking him up from the airport. I'm going to leave you two alone. John, I am so happy that you came home alive, and Anna, I am so happy for you! John, call me if you need anything."

"I'll be fine," John said. He had been orphaned at a young age, and grew up in the foster system without real parents or siblings. Since he began dating Anna, her sister had become something like a younger sibling for John. He smiled at her and gave her a friendly hug before she left. "Everything is fine, now that your sister is in my arms again."

He returned his full attention to Anna as her sister left, his hands holding hers and he pulled her in to a long embrace. "I saw that you're still wearing your engagement ring. You have no idea how much it means to me that a beautiful woman like you would wait for me, even after you had every reason to think I was dead. Once we're married, I promise to do everything within my power to always be the husband you deserve."

Again, he kissed her tenderly. His warmth surrounded her, his muscular arms protective and comforting around her shoulders as he held her close.

"Did you really think I would ever take it off?" She asked looking up at him "no matter what happened to you I would never give up on you." Anna said as she let go of him again, this time going back to the table and quickly gathering her books "let's get out of here... Are you hungry? Or tired?" She asked "it was probably a long flight..."

"I'm hungry and tired both. I flew from Afghanistan to Germany last night, and boarded a commercial airline from Frankfurt to Atlanta this morning. From Atlanta, of course, I flew here. There were some politicians wanting to do photo ops with me, since I had been MIA for six months and then turned out to be alive, but all I wanted to do was come home to spend some time with you. I'm so glad your sister left us- oh, you know that I love the little twerp, but I wanted to see you! I don't need anything fancy. Let's just go back to your apartment, and you can tell me all about how the last seven months have been treating you! I still haven't gotten the mail you sent after my convoy was ambushed and I had to disappear into the countryside in order to survive, and the last letter you sent me was a month old when I got it." John reached into his pocket, and pulled out a dirty brown envelope that Anna immediately recognized.

"I kept this inside my body armor the whole time. Sometimes when I didn't think that I would make it home to you, I would just hold this in my hands and it gave me the strength to keep going. I felt so bad for my friends who had nobody there for them, or whose wives left them while they were over there in that godawful place. But I always knew that you would be faithful to me." John chuckled. "I was faithful to you, too, of course, but there weren't many opportunities unless you count camels!"

The indirect reference to sex brought an awkward silence, and they were both suddenly aware that neither of them had gotten laid in over a year. When John's eyes met Anna's, they were smoldering like glowing coals. "Yeah. Let's get back to your apartment, and dinner can wait."

Anna bit her lip wondering if she would be able to live up to his expectations after all this time. "Do you think you remember the way?" She asked pulling out his car keys and handing them to him "I hope you don't mind, my sister kind of took my car when she started college. It was just supposed to be temporary..." Walking out of the building she held tightly onto her bag, trying to calm her nerves "do you have to go back?"

John laughed as he led them over to his car. A year's worth of dust still clung to it. "Tell your Dad I said 'thanks' for putting a new battery in my car for me and airing up the tires. He said that he still remembered getting back from Vietnam, and his car not starting after it hadn't been run in a year, and my car was as dead as a doornail. He knew that I would want to see you, and so he spent the whole morning getting my car running again after I called from the airport."

John kissed Anna sweetly. "I won't have to go back any time soon, and I might not have to go back at all. If I stay in, you know how often the Airborne divisions get deployed. But I want to marry you, Anna. I want you to be my wife and the mother of our children. I want to go to sleep every night making love to you, and wake up every morning with you in my arms. And I won't be able to do that if the next time, the Taliban kills me." He sighed deeply, his eyes sad and vacant as he stared blankly into the distance. His body was young, healthy, and alive. But suddenly his eyes looked very old and tired.

He turned the key in the ignition. Anna's father had done a great job getting the car running again after a year of neglect, and it started without incident. John turned to Anna, patting her hand as though touching her to make sure she was real. "It feels so good to be here with you again."

"So many of my friends will never have the chance for a future. And the men that I killed over there were taken from their families as well- I don't want to live like this forever. Part of me wants to stay in the Army, since it's the only stable life I've ever really known, and most of my friends are in the military. But I don't want to come home from a year overseas and have our kids barely remember me, and I don't want to leave you alone to effectively live like a single mother while I'm overseas. I want to be home with you. And the Army isn't able to give us any sort of life where I'll be able to have the life with you I want, and be the husband to you that you deserve. I think I won't re-enlist when my contract is up. I'll go back to school using the GI Bill, and get a job doing something good. Something that helps people, and will allow me to be there for you and our children."

He smiled at her, his eyes calm and peaceful again as he imagined a happy future with his bride-to-be. Pulling onto the road, he began driving the familiar route back to Anna's apartment.

As he talked about marriage and kids she couldn't help but fiddle with the ring on her hand. She tried to remember his proposal but she couldn't, it had been so sudden and rushed. "I doubt we will be having kids anytime soon... I mean we have so much to figure out before then..." She said "and I haven't even thought about planning a wedding, I wanted to be able to do it all with you..." Anna sighed "I guess I just haven't thought about all that."

John smiled. "No, Sweetheart, there's no rush on the kids at all. I can understand if you want to wait a bit on the marriage and the wedding. After all, you haven't seen me in a year, and I've probably changed a bit since then. We're only going to get one chance to build a life together, and it's important that we take our time and do it right."

They stopped outside of Anna's old, familiar apartment. John's eyes met hers. "Just so you know, I understand if you don't want to have sex with me right now. It's OK. After I've been gone for a year, I probably feel like a stranger to you. Several of my buddies said that their wives won't have sex with them for a bit after a deployment until she's used to having them home again. I understand if you're that way, too."

For a long moment, they sat together in the car in silence. John turned the ignition off, and again his hand folded over Anna's. "I've always been the leader in our relationship, but you have no idea how mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausted I am after what I've been through. I know that I've changed. But I'm still the man that you have always loved, and I'm strong enough to keep waiting for you."

"I don't want to be like that. I don't want to make you wait around for me to feel like things are the same as they were. They aren't, they never will be. I can't go back in time and change things. I thought you died and I mourned for you. It all happened..." She said looking away from him, tears in her eyes as she remembered getting the news. "But I still love you, exactly as I did before you left and exactly as I will until I die." Anna got out of the car and dug around her bag for her keys. As she walked up to the door she couldn't help but wonder if he had changed.

John's eyes traveled Anna's body as he followed her, drinking in the delicious curves of her ass from behind. She unlocked the door, and was happily surprised to see that he was staring at her body with undisguised lust. He obviously liked what he saw.

"You're sure that you're ready to have sex with me?" John asked. When Anna nodded in affirmation, he lost no time in stepping in close to her. With his powerful arms, he effortlessly scooped her from her feet as she squealed in girlish delight.

He carried her to the bedroom that still contained so many happy memories for them, and tossed her gently to the bed as he stripped his shirt from himself. He stepped in, kissing Anna deeply as his strong, calloused hands reached up her shirt and traveled up the soft, sensitive skin of her back.

"God, I need you!" John groaned as he kissed her deeper, their tongues intertwining passionately as she felt his large, rigid manhood pressing against her through their clothes.

The scent of him filled her with comforting, familiar memories as well as wild lust and the primal, instinctive need to re-claim him as her mate as his hands finally moved to the front of her shirt, tenderly caressing her soft breasts as his lips moved, planting a line of soft kisses down her neck.

Anna wrapped her arms around him. "Slow down a bit, you just got back." She said "we have plenty of time..." Anna took a deep breath as she looked at him "are you sure you want to do this right now? I mean it's been a long time... Maybe I'm not the same as you remember me. I don't want to disappoint you."

John smiled at Anna, and kissed her with a quiet chuckle. "We can slow down if you would like. You're right; our first time together after a year apart should be special, and we can wait until later. But just know that I always desire you. I want you sexually now, and I will want you sexually tonight, and I will still want you 50 years from now. You're worried about disappointing me? Sweetheart, you've never disappointed me before, and I can't imagine that you ever will. To tell you the truth, I'm worried about disappointing you! Remember, I haven't gotten laid in over a year, I've been looking forward to making love to you again that whole time, and you know how my sex drive is. To be perhaps a bit too honest, it's not going to be easy for me to last longer than an excited teenager the first time I cum with you."

John kissed her again, cuddling next to her calmly and running his hands gently through her hair. "I love you, Anna, and that's what's important. I'll do my best to never make you feel bad about your performance in the bedroom or anywhere else, but all you have to do in order to make all my greatest fantasies come true is simply be yourself. I promise you that you'll never disappoint me if you just do that! I'm not expecting a porn star; I'm expecting you. For now, we can just cuddle. I've missed you so badly over the course of the last year that my heart feels as though it will explode if I don't communicate my love for you in some way. I promise not to do anything sexual until you're ready, I really am fine just holding you. Then, what would you say to dinner at your favorite restaurant?"

John wrapped a muscular arm protectively over Anna. "Perhaps you've changed over the year. That's part of what makes you human. I don't want to burden you with what I've seen and done over this deployment; that horrible stuff doesn't need to invade the purity of this room. But everyone changes, all the time. Neither of us will be the same at 70 as we are now. And accepting that change is part of loving someone. I'm able to accept and love any changes that have occurred to you over the year, if you're willing to try to do the same for me."

His warm, muscular body felt comfortable and soothing against Anna as his breathing began to slow and his heart rate slowly returned form its excited state to normal.

"This is all just a lot to handle I guess right now. Less then an hour ago I was certain that I would never see you again." Anna curled up next to him "I had to plan your funeral... It was awful...." She did her best to cry "and now all I can think about is myself, how much I had to suffer. You're the one who went through so much... I'm a horrible person. You don't deserve this, I don't deserve you. You really should take this ring back..." She said looking at her hand "I can't even remember the night you gave it to me...."

John pulled Anna into his arms. "As my counselors at the VA have told me a thousand times, and now I'm telling you: be kind to yourself. You're not a horrible person; you're one of the best people I've ever met. And I love you. I've always loved you, and I always will."

He held her, allowing her to cry into his shoulder as he rubbed her back and kissed her forehead. "If you can't remember the night when I proposed, I'll remind you. It was your 20th birthday. I was about two months out from my deployment overseas. Remember, I gave you a big box with a bow on it? You shook it, and it was light for the size. Inside of that big box was a smaller box, upon which I had written something that I love about you. Inside of that box was a smaller box, with another thing that I love about you written on it. There were seven boxes, and all of them had things I love and admire about you written on them. Then, there was an ornate, lacquered-wood music box. And when you opened it, I had this ring inside of it, and I had written 'will you marry me?' on the mirror inside of it with a marker. Remember how hard you said it was to get the words off of the mirror?" John chuckled.

"Just hold me, Sweetheart. I'm not going anywhere now, and I never will unless you ask me to do so." John held her close, wishing that Anna could simply feel the weight of the love that his heart bore for her. His eyes were far away.

It wasn't the time and place to say anything, but Anna's tears reminded John of visits with the families of the friends he had lost overseas. Young mothers holding babies that would never meet their fathers wept as John showed them the respect that he would never get to show to his dead friends again. Tough old men that had been through hell a thousand times over in Vietnam cried like babies at the thought of the sons that were gone forever, their bodies blown to shreds by roadside bombs. Anna's tears brought back memories of noisy funeral processions through the streets of Afghanistan, where he had seen families mourning the deaths of enemy soldiers that John and his unit had killed. It was then that the humanity of those enemies that he had shot really struck him. John didn't want Anna to have to deal with those memories right now, or ever. She had enough burdens of her own. John kept his pain inside, but his arm tightened protectively around the girl he loved. John was quiet, staring at the ceiling as he held her. It took an invisible act of iron will not to join her in crying. He had to be strong. He hoped that his presence could bring her some form of comfort.

Anna did her best to wipe away the tears "I shouldn't be crying. I'm supposed to be happy..." She said "we should get ready to go to dinner. You can take a shower if you want, there's still some of your clothes in the closet if you need anything." She said sitting up "I just don't want to think about it all right now. I wish I could be better than a sobbing mess."

John smiled. "It's sweet that you care enough to be a -as you put it- sobbing mess. But you're a cute sobbing mess, if that helps! I think that the shower would do me some good. I'll make sure to save you some hot water!"

When they used to live together, they usually showered with the door open. This time, however, John closed the door. Anna heard the water running as John scrubbed himself clean, and then took a few minutes to masturbate to thoughts of his beautiful fiancee. By eliminating the immediacy of his lust, he would be able to focus more on meeting her emotional needs. And, if she still wanted to make love when they got home that night, then he wouldn't have to worry about not lasting long enough for her to enjoy herself.

Inwardly, he kicked himself for trying to make love to her so soon after getting home. After all, she would certainly have issues regarding his sudden appearance to work through.

He stepped from the shower when he was done. The towels were just where Anna had always kept them, and he dried off before wrapping a towel around himself.

"The shower's all yours if you want it, Anna!" he said with much more cheer than he had felt before heading into the shower as he headed towards the closet to hunt for his old clothes. He selected a nice-looking shirt that he remembered Anna liking and a comfortable pair of trousers, and then moved the contents of his dress uniform pockets into them. It felt good to be wearing civilian clothes again, and it felt even better to be heading out on a date with Anna!

Anna had found it a bit odd when he closed the door but she figured it was best not to bring it up, maybe he was just worried she wouldn't be okay with it anymore. "I'll just be a couple of minutes but if you want to pick something out for me it would help." She said as she walked into the bathroom and undressed "it'll take the pressure off of me to find something that you'll like." Anna didn't bother closing the door like he had. Even while he was gone she had continued to leave it open, it was one of the little things that helped her feel like he was still there. She got into the shower and tried her best to finish up as soon as she could not wanting to leave him waiting.

John smiled and let out a deep breath as he watched Anna undress through the open bathroom door. Her body was even more beautiful than he had remembered it. He admired her breasts with their perky nipples, and he felt his pulse quicken as she slipped out of her panties. The glorious curves of her ass had become even more beautiful during the year that her body had gotten to mature since he had seen her last. Her vulva was lovely, her dark pubic hair contrasting gloriously with her pale skin. It was not until she stepped into the shower that John went to choose her clothing.

After searching in her closet for a moment, he found a simple black dress of soft knit material. It looked like it would be comfortable for Anna, but she would also be gorgeous in it. It wouldn't be too formal for dinner out, but it would be suitable for eating dinner at a nice and moderately expensive restaurant. He hung the dress from the closet rod outside of the shower, and hoped that Anna would like his choice.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, he smiled at the faint silhouette of his fiancee that he could see through the shower curtain, and anticipated getting to appreciate her charms again once the shower curtain opened.

Anna finished her shower, getting out and quickly wrapping a towel around her body. She stood in front of the mirror as she dried her hair. It still hadn't set in that he was really there. It still felt as though he would vanish into thin air and she would wake up from a dream.

She was brought back to reality when she heard the sudden sound of metal hitting the sink. "No, no,no..." She hurried to set down the blow dryer in her hand as she watched her endgame my ring slip down the drain. "This can't be happening..." She stood there in disbelief. She hadn't once taken off that ring and although it was a bit big it had never fallen off before.

Hearing Anna's alarm, John appeared at the doorway. "Is everything all right, Sweety?" His eyes were wide with concern. He could see that she was upset, and he stepped in to wrap an arm around her. "What's wrong, Anna?"

"My ring fell off my finger and it kind of... Went down the drain..." She said worried he would be upset with her "I'm so sorry, it was an accident. I'm not sure what to do..." She took a step back "do you think there's anyway we can get it back?"

John smiled. "Of course there is. See that curved portion of pipe under the sink? That's called the 'trap', and it is there for, among other things, cases like this. Hold on. I'll get the toolbox out of my car. Do you have anything like a mop bucket handy to keep water from getting all over the floor?"

She grabbed the plastic trash can sitting in the corner. "I think this is all I have." She said sitting it under the sink and grabbing the dress he had picked out for her. While he was outside getting his tools she changed, wondering why he was so calm about it. From the moment he had seen her, she had been all over the place. She felt as though she was falling apart.
