Retirement Party this Sunday

If I was any closer, Shanks, I'd be there in a trice (or a car, for that matter). Have a great time!

And if you get to telling stories...

...here's one to share:

It’s not well known, but late one night during the time leading up to the Iraq War, George W. Bush decided to ease his stress by going out for a jog. Secret Service detail at his side, he set out for a jog along the beautiful, moonlit national mall.

After a mile or so, the President saw that he was passing the Washington Monument so he stopped for a moment. He looked up at the inspiring obelisk and wondered out loud, “George, if you can hear me, what advice do you have for me? How can I be cherished for my decisions as President?” Surprisingly, W hears a cultivated voice in reply: “Avoid foreign entanglements. And take care of your teeth.” Startled, President Bush said, “Thanks, Georgie. I expectorate that first part could be kinda tough but I’ll run it past Cheney.”

Bush continues his jog along the Mall and soon finds himself in front of the Jefferson Memorial. Stopping again for a breather and thinking that the eloquent Mr. Jefferson might also have some advice for him, W asks out loud: “Tommy Boy, if you can hear me, what advice do you have for me? How can I be cherished for my decisions as President?” Once again, W is treated to a reply: “Buy real estate. Prices always go up.” George is a little taken aback with this idea but he managed to answer, “Goodness, Tommy Boy, that might take some doin’ but I’ll see if Canada will take an offer for Quebec.”

W continues jogging down the moonlit Mall and just as his second wind begins to kick in he finds himself running up the steps to the Lincoln Memorial. He’s got the theme from Rocky playing in his head as he hits the top step. Surely ol’ Abe will have some good advice, too. So W asks, “Abe, if you can hear me, what advice do you have for me? How can I be cherished for my decisions as President?” George is amazed as long marble fingers of Abe’s left hand rise up off the arm of his chair and he starts to stroke his chin. After a few moments, the old rail splitter replies, “You look like you could use some rest, George. Take a night off and go to the theater.”

I'll try to keep track of what I toss in the chili this Sunday and post it for you...

;)

Thanks. I hope we're both talking about the same thing, though. I was asking about the use of bottled chili powder that one buys in the spice aisle. Are you a user or no? If not, I'd be interested in what you do to spice your chili.

I have a packet that I used that last time I made chili over at my GF's place - I'll see what brand it is, and what I add to the chili in addition.

Thanks. That answers the main question too. I go back and forth on the bottled powder. Sometimes I think it smells nasty and other times it seems like a reasonable time saver. I've yet to make up my own powdered mix, though. I usually just dice up a bushel of fresh jalapenos to add the flavor.

Vegetarian Chili Recipe
(just in case you have any wacko-left-leaning-hippie-vegetarians at the party)

2(ish) cans Kidney beans
1(ish) can black beans
2(ish) cups raw cashews
1 big can stewed tomatoes (squich 'em with your hands to break them up)
1 big can tomato juice
chopped bell pepper
chopped onion
whole kernel corn
grated (matchstick) carrots
grated (matchstick) zucchini
cumin
chili powder
tobasco sauce
powdered garlic
salt & pepper
basil
bay leaf
CrockPot

Rinse the beans, dump them in the crock pot. Add cashews, tomatoes, sauce. Dump in rough chopped bell peppers, onion, and the corn. Season with spices (to taste). Cook 2 hours on high, or 4 hours on low, then add matchstick carrots and zucchini (if desired). Continue to simmer on low for a few more hours, or on high for about half as long. Leave bowls of sour cream, avocado slices and sharp cheese out for guests to garnish/doctor their own chili; don't forget to leave the tobasco sauce out as well for those who want to make theirs 5 alarm. ;)

Serves - lots

FYI - the former President and First Lady will be living about 30-40 minutes from me after he leaves office...
