"The mayor's living on a cot, and I hope the President has a good day at golf."

Thus spoke Russel Honoré, retired lieutenant general and the man who led the military response after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans during the Bush administration. Honoré was referring to the pathetic tweet put out by the con artist wherein he accused the mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico of having poor leadership after Hurrican Maria struck the island.

The tweet in and of itself was typical of the con artist. Always try to point out how bad someone else is to deflect from the abject failure he is. After all, when you've gone golfing sixteen weekends in a row after telling everyone you'd be too busy working to go golfing, what is left than to claim the sandblasting of an entire island is no big deal?

Not only did the con artist accuse the mayor of poor leadership (how would the con artist know what leadership is in the first place?), he claimed the entire island of Puerto Rico wants everyone else to do the work for them. Considering the con artist won't even be on the island until Tuesday to see for himself how much the people have done without much outside assistance, it will be hilarious to hear him praise the people for the great job they did faced with the worst natural disaster in all of human history.

I would like to see more white men denouncing him. It carries more weight for him because he has no respect for women and minorities.

Which begs the question of why, when shots are taken of the "people" at his rallies, so many of those shown are fawning women.

Yeah, when the guy that lead that clusterfuck is dissing you, you're really fucking up.

Or, maybe, there's a larger scale, systemic problem that persists through many administrations, both D and R. There does not seem to be anyone willing to invest in pro-active measures and disaster preparedness at an effective level, either on the federal level or the state/territorial level, and this has been going on since the 70's at least.

There is a lot that could be done to make the response to Maria in Puerto Rico faster and more effective. A really large fraction of it needed to be started fifty or sixty years ago.

Jumping in without doing any research, as usual? He's the guy who came in and straightened everything out in the Katrina response.

Not really. Honore was designated commander of the military relief effort on August 31st, exactly two days after Katrina struck on the 29th. It took until Sept 4 to clear people out of the Superdome, which had been flooding since the 30th. So, if you want to make the argument that it takes time to clean up big messes, fine. It takes even longer when they happen across the sea and the local infrastructure was complete crap to begin with.

The point of the post, which you seem to be ignoring, is that in both cases the real problem stems from lack of pro-active investment in prevention and preparation. But lack of preparation is a bi-partisan problem. Can't have that.

Naw, he's the one who finally cut through the red tape and made relief happen.

And, again, naw. Preparation requires authorization of spending and of execution. That's not a bipartisan issue currently.
