Hello fellow Literoticans :) Apologies if this is in the wrong forum -- it seemed the most appropriate place to ask a question of the authors here.

I've been a long time reader of Lit, and last year started to contribute some (badly written) stories of my own.

In the year in between I've written a lot of non-sexual stuff that I've submitted elsewhere, and I'd like to think that my writing style has improved somewhat.

As a result, the stories I am writing for submission here now actually do have a plot, characters with depth and a general story. Before I was essentially submitting sex scenes with some flimsy plot to tie them together, but I realised I wanted someone to actually read the whole thing and not just skip through to the sex.

However, onto the point of the thread (God, I do like to procrastinate), I was wondering if there was a way to delete and then resubmit updated stories? As well as writing new material, I am also in the process of going through my old works and rewriting large chunks of them, to make them flow better and be far more interesting. Even their main purpose, the sex scenes, was pretty short and badly described in some of them (how they managed a 4.8+ average I'll never know). I've added to the stories tremendously (even elements that weren't there before), and changed some dialogue, some descriptions, bulked it up. Basically a huge facelift for them, since, on a re-read now, they're quite embaressing. And whilst I'm not embaressed about the content (so it's pretty one-track sex stuff, meh), I AM embaressed about the writing, and that's not a good feeling as a writer, as I'm sure you all know.

Particularly as they're supposed to be in the science-fiction and fantasy section, where a story is a pretty important part of it. Over the past year or so some wonderful stories have been posted in there, with plots as rich as the characters, and yet they maintain some very intense sex scenes. My stories pale in comparison to theirs, and so I hope with a rewrite they might fair better against them.

Again, I suppose all of that information was totally irrelevant to my question, but I waffle. It's why I'm so good at writing essays I suppose ;) So... is there a way to resubmit work? I couldn't see the option on my Author Panel, and I would like to have my new and improved works displayed instead ^^

Another question I wanted to ask, which ties into the first, is advice on whether to rename a character. I chose the names for all the characters in my story from the top of my head, with no deliberate influences from elsewhere. However, the name of my Elven character is apparently the name of the main heroine from another erotic book that has been published, and is therefore in copyright. Normally this wouldn't matter if it were a common name (how many times has Melissa appeared in books, for example ^^), but it is not a common name. I fear I might have been steered towards choosing this name without knowing, even though I've never read the book.

I suppose the question is thus: does anyone know if I'm legally obliged to change the name? And, even if I'm not, would it be curteous to do so? I do have another name lined up that would serve the purposes of being Elven well enough, and it'd be easy to change the name by submitting my newer stories anyway.

Christ, sorry for the wall of text. If anyone's made it this far then thanks for reading, and thanks for answering :)

Essentially, all you have to do is either resubmit the story with a "delete" tacked onto the title and note in the comment you want to delete the existing story--or, if you have the replacement ready, send that with the same title and "edit" added to the title line and an explanation of what you want to do in the comment box.

This is covered in the FAQ questions you can get to from your submissions page.

No, there's no legal impediment to naming your character as you like. If you feel the reader will make a connection to another character out there that will intrude in their read of your story, you might want to rename your character, though.

Thankyou very much :D

I did look through the Submissions Guide but I must have missed the FAQ. Thanks for answering both parts, I think I'll still rename her. It'll just take a while for the new name to work its way into my mind ^^

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year :)

Yeah, the FAQ button is a little hard to track down. Merry Merry to you too.

What you're looking at is posting a major revision or rewrite of the stories rather than a simple edit. So when you post the revised version I would used the word REVISED instead of EDIT, like so:

Sisters of the Cohort -- REVISED --

Also add a (short) statement in the comments field summarizing the extent of the revision so Laurel will know how closely she needs to review the revised version.

Sadly, posting of revised versions often takes as long as posting completely new stories because some sleazeballs have used the edit or revise procedure to slip banned material past the editors. I think few of those who hang out here tryingto improve their writing would do so, but we all suffer for the transgressions of a few.
