Responding to Story Comments?

I was wondering what the general consensus was on responding to the anonymous comments that are posted by readers of your stories. Is there a proper etiquette for this? How do you deal with the negative comments?

If the comment is anonymous there is no real way to respond. If it was a PC (Public Comment) then your response will only be read by future readers, not the commentor.

I leave almost all anonymous PCs alone. I don't respond, nor do I delete them unless they are just an attack on me, not on the story.

Negative comments can be helpful. One of my stories (Trapped - link to my stories in my signature) has attracted many negative comments. I put the story in Loving Wives which is a sure way to get negative responses, when it really should have gone in fetish or mild BDSM.

Wow...that's a big question and one I have struggled with myself.

In terms of the public comments section, there is not much you can do other than choose to delete them. The system tracks you somehow or the other (ask techie hubby not me how), so that you can only make one comment. If it is something you really feel is important then you can always do that. Otherwise just delete ones that you feel are hateful or unfair.

In terms of the emails we receive, I always respond with thanks to all of the positive ones. I simply hit delete for the unfair or hateful ones (I get my fair share of those just from my pen name alone being a hot button for some people...let alone my hot black hero).

The one that always gives me pause are those in-between where the issues they have are legitimate and I may want to actually to further input form them...or if they are exploring something inside themselves. Those have actually proven to be some of most powerful constructive criticisms and one even led to a wonderful friendship...of opposites if you will.

So short answer...follow your heart and best judgment.

Thanks Og.

I'm still new at this and have four stories posted. I have gotten some negative comments that are pretty stereotypical on two of them. The themes are interracial and based on a couple of the comments the person(s) just didn't like the subject matter, had nothing to do with the story.

I didn't see a link to your story Trapped but I'll track it down.

Thanks Wife2hotblk,

I always reply to the e-mails I receive with a thank you. If a person takes the time to send it the least I can do is reply.

I haven't deleted any of the negative anonymous comments, a couple of them just show the person's ignorance and their dislike of the interracial subject matter. Pretty cowardly in my opinion. I like and look for constructive criticism since I am trying to get better at writing.

We assume that readers are rational and fair, and the assumption is deluded.

As long as readers can give feedback writers will get their nonsense. There is no cure for it. And flattery is as bad as the bizarre criticism.

Flattery is bad ???

So when I get an e-mail that says, "Your story was so great I came five times reading the first sentecne," that's bad? :D:D

There's a Dear Anonymous thread around here somewhere, but the search function is not working for me right now. We used it to respond to the anonymous feedback. It's pretty funny.

As a reader and sometime (would-be) writer, I usually leave an anonymous comment, but if the story did not interest me, I don't bother. I don't consider myself able to make constructive comments as I don't know enough about writing.

I doubt that anyone knows enough about writing. Tons of garbage is published all the time by folks who get paid to know the difference but dont have a clue.

The trick, I suppose, is to recognize honest feedback and valid criticism, and screw the rest of it.

I dont score the stories I read becuz I dont post the stories I write, though I did leave 5 stars or whatever maybe twice becuz the stories knocked my socks off. They were exceptional. But most of the time it isnt cool to harpoon others when you wont wear a target on your back.

Comments by anonymous persons, positive or negative, can be retained or removed...your call. I always respond to those who leave a contact. :D

Agree. There is no way to respond to Anon, good or bad, so I don't put much weight in that direction. Respond to those who leave their name. :)

Delete such comments

I feel strongly about deleting such comments. I'd never delete an honest critique of the story, but people can be obnoxious and some come trolling around, aiming to do nothing more than leave rude comments like graffiti on a mural. There should be no guilt or worry felt about deleting such vandalism and restoring the mural.

Those of us who write gay stories see a lot of these comments--and believe me, the culprit never comes back. As you say, they are, indeed, cowards. What you need to think about, however, is future readers who sometimes like to go through the comments. Don't ruin their feelings about the end of the story by leaving up this "hate-crime." That lets the asshole who left it "win" because he can jerk people out of thoughts on your story to thoughts on his comment. Which is exactly what he wants. Everyone to remember the graffiti he left, not the mural you painted.

I agree with your way of thinking, concerning this subject.

You dont seem too confident about your writing skills if a troll can bust your balls.

It's insane to see how many people lack class on Literotica. When I registered, I thought to myself finally I can write my stories where people will be open-minded and mature. Nope! People will be assholes wherever you go. You just have to choose which comments are worth listening to and which aren't. I always delete the stupid comments, but keep the ones written with respect and maturity, even if they give a bad note to my story.

Yep, unfortunately the Internet has proven that folks will be assholes wherever you go. Sorry about that.

Thanks for all the replies. 3113 I like your point of view, will definitely take it into consideration.

ITS THE HUMAN CONDITION. THIS LESSON IS THE WHOLE POINT OF THE JESUS CRUCIFIXION. PEOPLE SCOURGE AND CRUCIFY BECAUSE THEY CAN, BECAUSE IT BEATS BOREDOM, BECAUSE ITS THEIR NATURE TO ATTACK DIFFERENT.

Nature or conditionment? I don't think people are born assholes, I think they grow into them. I think the people who're assholes (or that at the very least can't be mature or reasonable when expressing a different opinion) lash out like that because they're insecure. It's cliche to say that, I know, but it's way true. The only way for them to feel better about themselves is to put others down.

It's sad, but I'm sure they weren't born like that.
