Hi! i'm out to a few people at my college and one day one of them said that an assignment was "so gay" and i sit right next to him, i turned to him and said "Yes i am, but the paper? i doubt it" he stared at me dumbfounded (i think he forgot i was a lesbian) and then cracked up i wanted to know if anyone else has had someone say that and they responded or what people feel about it

"thats so gay" has become quite popular with the 13 to 18 or so crowd now-a-days. They use it to ridicule or disparage just about anything. The phrase can be hurled as an epithet or used in a "lighter" sense characterizing something foolish or funny. I wonder if we sounded this ridiculous to our elders....

Thats so queer!

I seem to hear "Thats so queer" more than gay. Either way its the same meaning/context. I usually use one of two responses depending on the situation. The old raised eyebrows funny look that just leaves them confused. Or you turn to look at them and say "Why thank you." and blow a quick kiss.

As an English major, I always find myself laughing at how the language and words have been changed to mean other things during the passage of time. If you really want to yank someone's chain the next time a comment is made about an assignment or anything else being "gay," turn to them and ask what's so funny and happy about it. I wonder how many would actually catch the joke.

I was taught to use proper English as a child. My parents and grandparents were obsessed over it. I didn't use slang and was always lost at school when it was used. My brother, on the other hand, didn't seem to fall under that obsession and I'd get completely baffled by what he was saying. Less than two years of an age gap between us and it felt like light years.

*laughs* Playing jokes on words is one of my favorite past times. I substitute teach sometimes and watching the teenagers try to decipher things is hilarious. But they learn something though, so I get the pleasure of both.

Do you mean "pastimes"? ;)

Back to the original post, my 10 year old kids have recently started to use that phrase and it annoys us to no end. We've put a stop to it each time we've heard them use it, and explained what "gay" means in current times and why using the word "gay" as a perjorative term is inappropriate in our household.

Cheers for ginger and his Goddess

*giggles* Yeah, I can write my way out of any scenario but just don't ask me to do it without a VERY good spell-check program. Running joke is that I inherited my spelling problem from my dad. ;)

Now, as for you and your Goddess teaching your children that, thank you! It does my heart good to see parents stepping up and teaching their children tolerance and respect for others.

Sorry, I'm a grammar and spelling pedant sometimes. It comes back to bite me on the ass when I make a typo while being pedantic. :D

There are several members of our families (uncles, an aunt) living openly-gay lifestyles, and both of us are "recreationally-bi" (meaning we enjoy same-sex activities but only for fun, not for emotional relationships - we have that with one another already). So for our kids to grow up with derision or a lack of respect for sexuality would be more than a little hypocritical.

Cool!

lol Thanks for the suggestions! i hate it when people use the temenology but i find that making them look stupid for using it is so much more satisfying then annoying my girlfriend with my chatter... and i Thank the Goddess each day for people who teach their children to be open minded....

I don't think the word gay in that context has anything to do with gay as in homosexual. For me, the word has two meanings. Well three really because it also means jolly.

When people cut me off in traffic, I tell them they're faggots and are going to burn in hell.

i agree with you but "Homo" has some worse connotations and "Lesbian" is not much better... what can i say i live in an entire town of jerks and closed minded people... (When i did the day of silence in high school all people did the entire day was try to get me to talk and were extremely rude, thankfully i carried around a pad of paper with responces for general questions and a pen to respond to other questions lol)

i'm lucky the people at my college are alright and accepting, they even have a GSA! and while there was a GSA in my high school it was about 10 people and my school had 2,500

You are a very rude person you know that?

Are you under the impression that they can hear me when we're in two different cars?

I'm not that dillusional i do drive thank you but it's still a rude thing to say People don't walk up to people and say "That's so Hetro!" or "You damned hetro" i'm sorry for finding it rude but i still think that way

Are you under the impression that your state of mind depends on whether others hear you?

More to the point, are you familiar with the phrase "'Character' is what you do when nobody is watching" ?

Again, you seem to be under the impression that someone can hear me while I'm alone in my car. After all, the difference between what I do and the example you're pulling out of your ass is that *no one can hear me*

So again, how is what I'm doing rude if it doesn't exist in a social context?

And if things you do while alone are rude then I'm ashamed to say that I wipe my ass, pick my nose, and belch while alone in my bathroom.

I'm not saying I'm a *good* person; I'm saying I'm a *polite* person.

This is a feeling I know well.

Oh, boy. I have quite a story to tell. It happened a year ago. I was coming from a GLBT Alliance meeting at my college campus and was walking with my friends, Alan and Peter, two gay men. We were walking by Talbot's when some straight couple was walking by, and the girl said to her boyfriend : " I hate this frigging mall, dude. The place is so gay !"

We looked at each other. A bisexual girl and two gay men, united as one.

"Oh, no you did not just say that !" This was our collective outcry, followed by a lecture on political correctness and gay rights.

The straight girl and her straight-laced boyfriend looked surprised, disgusted and walked away. We laughed and I treated my gay pals to some chinese food before we headed back to our respective dorms.

LOL sorry ha ha ha :) I think this deserves to be qouted, since it reminds me of so many things. And yes I know it is politically incorrect. But I can almost hear it in my ears.

Dude LOL lol .

PredatorSmile, just watch the crazy college movies (you know them all). And also watch Stephen Lynch. And you will crack up laughing. Since the "dude" thing. is really more stereotypical, than the sentence "that is so gay". PredatorSmile I laugh of them (not you, and the two gay guys). Since really the "dude" thing, just cracks me up.

yeah, i may be straight, but I also get angered when I hear people talk down about gay's and lesbians... I go to a private college, adn went to a private high-school, so they didn't need to allow us to form GSA's... instead I jsut have this talent at rounding up and binding together large numbers of people, and so in teh end, every gay, every lesbian, is part of my "legion" at my college, and as such, we defend the rights of every1 to engage in sexual matters with what ever sex they choose.... pretty much, "gay bashing" has dissappeared at every school i end up at, and I like to give credit to those who have the courage to first join my cause and risk the large excess ammount of riddicule that comes at the start both times.

and now to the point of this thread, I had read this hoping to provide some hints, but all the really good replies that i have, have been mentioned, so congrats to yuo all for your excellent minds and witty toungues ;)
