When I move to my own place I am going to buy a puppy...one that will not be huge when it grows.

I am sort of looking at Jack Russell Terriors, mini-Doberman's, Beagles, Basset Hounds...or something along that range in size.

Any hints, ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated. :)

Jack Russell Terriors - Hyper Hyper Hyper....Did I mention Hyper?

Jack Russells are great little dogs! So are Basset Hounds, but they do get big and they slopper alot.

someone else told me that, too.

Talk to Miles about Jack Russells, he just got a new puppy a few months ago.

I have mini Schnauzers
They are smart, clean (hair instead of fur, ie perfect for allergic people), no shedding.

They are sturdy, but small. They do find their "voices" around 6-8 months and you need to train them to not bark too much. It is easy to do.

They are very gentle dogs with lots of personality.

Oops! My apologies - I didn't see your thread mia! :rose:

I'll just read what responses you get, if you don't mind and let mine fall to the back of the pack.

This is what I was thinking. I HATE shedding...I had a lab and he drove me nuts with all the fur.

I love boxers but they shed like crazy, too.

LOL...isn't it funny how some of us think of the same threads at the same time...

Jump in wherever you want. :)

I had a beagle for years and she was a great dog. They're not extra-hyper, but they are very curious (Snoopy from Peanuts was a beagle for a reason). They don't grow to be too big - less than two feet tall. You do have to be somewhat careful with what you leave around them, although this is probably true of most dogs. My beagle could get into anything... she could open zippers, Tupperware, you name it. But because she was rather small, we just made sure that anything that smelled good was up high, out of her reach.

My friend has mini schnauzers and they are adorable. I love them to pieces and was thinking about that, but Westies and Scotties are so sweet as well.

A small Schnauzer gets my vote.

No shedding. Smart and gentle. and NO yapping.

If they do bark they have a fairly deep one.

Poodles are too yappy and hyper but smart.

Shnauzrs are also good with kids. ]

All this depends on its training of course. The owner produces the pet they deserve.

A few notes about a couple of breeds:

Terriers (proper spelling - although some call them little terrors ;) ): they do have something of a mind of their own and are a big dog in a little body. You do have to be careful to discipline them firmly (but not harshly) and consistently, or they will become little terrors. They are not afraid to try or take on anything and are generally very energetic - although I would not categorize them as hyper (except maybe Jack Russels). They are good people dogs and like to sit in your lap/etc., but they need to be taught behavior limits or they will tear your home apart and dominate you. It isn't hard to keep them in control, but they require that you put forth the effort and be consistent about it.

I think you would like a Westie, a Scottie or a Cairn Terrier.

Beagles (I call them bugles): If you want a quiet dog, don't get a beagle. Very energetic, and very noisy. They were breed for fox and racoon hunting, and they are a baying hound type of dog. Trying to break them of that habit is not going to work; they and you will just wind up unhappy.

Basset hounds: Cool looking dogs, but they do slobber a lot, and they don't move very fast so don't expect a dog you can play frisbee with. Oh, and did I mention that they slobber a lot? :D

I have a Westie as well
Sheis a wonderful dog
She is extemely smart but really dominant
Training takes a strong but gentle hand
They are headstrong, like Jack Russells

With the schnauzer, I opted for natural ears
I don't believe one should bonsai a pet

Absolutement!

I understand all that elective cosmetic puppy plastic surgery is illegal in England
There seems to be a strong movement in the U.S. as well

What flavor?

The mom's a husky crossed with a spaniel. The father's a lab. Beautiful babies, but getting too big for me too keep here. They're plenty big enough for homes now, and I'm ready to have a sense of sanity once again.

:)
