I have a female character waking up in her clothes after crashing out on a bed after a night out. I want her to discover that she's still wearing makeup without recourse to a mirror (otherwise she might end up looking ten years younger!).

Is makeup sticky if you leave it on afte a night out? Could you touch your fingers to eyeshadow and have some of it on your fingers? What does it feel like?

I think an easier indicator would be a smudged pillowcase. You'd have to have a LOT on in order to feel it with fingers.

Yep, you'd just about have to put it on with a palette knife for you to feel it that way. Smudges on the pillow are good, and if she rubs her eyes, she can have the mascara on her fingers, too.

Well, she's got a bit on because she really wanted to attract this guy, but she's not got that much on because she put it on originally to go to lectures in. The lectures led to meeting up with this guy, then to a few drinks, then to a night out, then to waking up on his bed with her makeup still on.

I don't understand a lot of makeup. It's at times like this I wish I was still with my former Lady; she was a cow (and still is), but she was handy reference for writing female characters.

I'm sure you could go to a department store make-up counter and sweet talk one (or two or three) of the employees to give you ALLLLLLLLLL the details ... maybe even demonstrate!

I don't know if it will help you earl, but one of the best indicators for me is mascara. I don't know if I'm strange, but I can always tell when I have it on and if I sleep in it, it tends to stick some of my eyelashes together. If she woke up with her eyelashes stuck together enough to see them, she would know she still had it on, and if she tried to separate them, she would end up with some on her hand most likely.

Whenever I pass out and then wake up with make-up on, my face feels cakey and my eye make-up has usually eyebooger glued my lids shut. It's normally smeared and I looks like I have hollows under them. But it's not really sticky.

That's actually a pretty good idea. I used to be in retail. The cosmetic girls (alert sweeping generation follows) were often nice, young, sexy and fun loving. A good looking guy asking for her help with a story he was writing could work wonders.

When I wear makeup it's the smudges on the pillow and the mascara that is the telltale signal for me. Like for Coleen the mascara sticks my eyelashes together and it's harder for me to open up my eyes. Feels kinda dry and glued together. Then I always smudge my fingers from it while rubbing my eyes. And when I look in the mirror I look like a panda.

Occasionally my cheeks feel a bit dry too from the foundation.

Also, my lips are dry if I've fallen asleep with lipstick, and they feel tight somehow.
And I have an overall greasy feeling as well.

Sleeping with mascara on can result in broken, lost, eyelashes. It's a pain sometimes, but I do the good girl ritual of cleaning my face and eyes before going to sleep.
(Lord knows I have little enough to spare in lashes)

I immediately rub under the eyes and usually, if my makeup is still on, mascara is on my fingertips....

If she woke up after having sex...I doubt there would be lipstick on her face...perhaps the pillow or the person next to her...
