I'm sure I'm not unlike others, particularly women, who don't appreciate getting PM's from people we've had some discussion on the boards or who have read a story we've posted. What I don't appreciate are people (both men and women) who PM out of nowhere and want to engage in cyber sex. Not only is cyber sex not my thing, but if I replied to all of the requests I get, I wouldn't have time for anything else ... on or off line.

Pretty much why I expected this thread to be a colossal failure, as I anticipated it'd be primarily a bunch of sleazy dudes making 'requests' like, "Y'all sexy bitches need to send me some titty pics, yo!" Or, "Any of you nasty sluts send me a hot little message and I'll show you how hard you made my cock.

I suspect a lot of requests (almost exclusively from men, no doubt) go unanswered, and I imagine there are horror stories aplenty (mostly from women, I'd wager) regarding PMs that have been sent, but it seems some people - more than I would've expected - are able to be respectful, play nice, and have found a happy medium where the thread managed to be fun.

Continuing this discussion, There are two types of PM's that pretty much always go unanswered.
First, as described above, the instant cyber sex invitation.
The other is the complete opposite- "How's it going" or "What are you up to".
That type takes too much effort and time. "Not much- you?" "Just enjoying reading the posts"... yada yada. Too slow.
Guys, you need a hook with bait on it- do your homework- post on the same forums as I do, or at least know something beyond what is in my profile.

In all fairness, it's not just the men who are guilty of that. I've gotten a few PMs over the years from women who didn't offer much in the way of a greeting or initial contact.
"How are you?"
"You seem interesting. Wanna chat?"
"I like your signature/disclaimer."
While I'm always a little flattered whenever someone finds me interesting enough to message, none of those openings really spark much of a conversation.
If your initial message doesn't really require more than a few words in reply, you should probably start over, or maybe even reconsider messaging the person in the first place. Be honest and ask yourself: why do I want to talk to this person? What topic do I most want to discuss with them? What sort of reply am I hoping for? And then tailor your PM accordingly.
