Republicans in U.S. House kills inclusion of trans women in Violence Against Women Ac

It's not just trans women who are excluded. They are blocking protections for ALL LGBT domestic violence victims, American Indians, and undocumented immigrants.

Where is freak'in Obama's "bully pulpit" on this issue that effects ALL of us???

yeah, his determination seems to ebb and flow.

The GOP still has some people who aren't from hee haw land. Where I live in NJ it is the burbs, and the government in my county and the towns in it is mostly GOP, but it is the old moderate GOP, that is socially moderate and fiscally conservative, and that is who voted for this bill (didn't check and see how my local rep voted, probably for it). The problem with the GOP is it was taken over by what HL Mencken used to call the KKK branch of the Democratic party in his day, Southern Whites and Farmers, who push the religious fundamentalist social position, the anti education/ignorance is bliss crowd (aka Sarah Palin and her Ilk), it is a coalition of basically rednecks and other creatures of the dark and muddy.

These same people have been pushing for years to try and get laws off the books that allow men to be prosecuted for rape (arguing that a man has the right to have sex with his wife, consenting or not), it is the same people that believe that rape somehow can be 'inauthentic', like if the woman gets pregnant, or argue that if a woman is wearing 'sexy' clothing, they are asking for it. Mencken once said that if this group of people disappeared suddenly, the IQ of the US on average would go up 50 points, and he probably was correct.

Yeah, the gop guys who voted for this were mostly moderates, in LA for example people from the NO area. In NJ I wasn't surprised to see Scott Garret voting no, he represents a district full of farm yokel types from northwest NJ, this is a man who had a chief of staff who wrote an op ed once saying that conservation and recycling were against God's will, that God wants us to use the Planet up (and farmers wonder why they have the reputation for being morons.....).

Every time I see Sarah Palin (or her ilk) I picture her holding a banjo and I hear the theme song from the movie Deliverance... I swear!

All Southern white people aren't idiots, I assure you. Some of us, especially those under 40 or so, are actually non-stupid on social issues. There are more of us than you think.

Bi bunny-
There are good people no matter where ypu go, but if you look at the makeup of the GOP, you look at the house of representatives and those running the party, it is based in the farm belt and down south, the 'good people' are a distinct majority. The religious fundamentalists that have dominated the GOP are from the farm belt and from down South. This is the GOP base, it is the extremist, let's make the Bible law types that dominate the GOP, it is the moron in Missouri saying how a woman who is raped cannot get pregnant, it is those saying we should ensconce bigotry in the constitution by banning same sex marriage, it is the same people who try and get law enforcement to ban S/M conventions.... All you have to look at is the national elections to see what I am talking about, the GOP is taking basically only the south and the farm belt states. Look at the leadership of the GOP, Boehner is farm belt, Cantor is virginia, McConnel is Kentucky, and I believe the head of the GOP is from Mississippi, and the GOP as a whole is controlled by the people I am talking aboiut.

There is hope for change, the younger generations are very different, but the GOP as a party has basically thrived on the angry and hating types, and they are concentrated down south and in the farm belt (along with to a certain extent what we used to call the Urban blue collar vote that became "reagan republicans".Give it a generation, and if the GOP keeps with its current tactics, they won't be able to get elected except in very limited places. And if there are all these young people who aren't so backward on social issues, then they better get off their asses and start voting, and letting the older, bigoted people know they won't stand for their crap any more. The sad truth is young people don't vote, and if they are upset at being called stupid and ignorant, then they are going to need to shut up the idiots. North Carolina, supposedly home to the research triangle and a lot of more educated, younger, more moderate voters, voted in a same sex marriage ban that not only did that, it totally took away the right of same sex couples, via contract law or anything else, to have any of the rights of marriage.....where were all those moderate people then?

Believe me, we have idiots here, the farmers in northwest NJ should be living in Alabama, they would fit right in, and Christie is a fucking gem, too , he has threatened to try and impeach the supreme court of NJ if they rule that NJ cannot ban same sex marriage (the civil unions law in NJ doesn't work, it is a failure, for a lot of reasons, and the court is likely to rule that only being married will allow full rights).
