I thought we had reached the zenith of right wing stupidity when James Onofhe held up a snowball in Congress as proof global warming wasn't happening.

But not to outdone, now we have Mo Brooks who blamed sea levels rising on rocks from the Dover Cliffs falling into the sea.

"The Earth is not warming. The White Cliffs of Dover are tumbling into the sea and causing sea levels to rise. Global warming is helping grow the Antarctic ice sheet.

Those are some of the skeptical assertions echoed by Republicans on the U.S. House of Representatives Science, Space and Technology Committee yesterday. The lawmakers at times embraced research that questions mainstream climate science during a hearing on how technology can be used to address global warming."

It has been my experience that stupidity is non-non-political. I mean...you're stupid and obviously a democrat. :)

Could the title have possibly been more clear?

Republican stupidity when it comes to science

Would ALL CAPS have helped your reading comprehension?

But yeah, I'm the stupid one. :D

And another moron who can't read chimes in.

Don't you want to defend the brilliant hypothesis that rocks falling in the ocean are making sea levels rise?

I didn't think so, ass clown.

I thought we had reached the zenith of "left wing stupidity" when you guys repeatedly ascribe stupidity itself to an entire political party rather than hold people individually accountable for their opinions and policies. But, no, it apparently is the gift that keeps on giving.

But, hey, rather than be accused of doing the same thing you're doing, let me just say YOU are a disingenuous idiot, irrespective of how many other lib Dems may or may not be.

Rep. Mo Brooks, like every other member of Congress regardless of party affiliation, probably knows next to nothing about environmental science based on his own exhaustive independent research. He is simply quoting snippets of someone else's research, and probably doing a superficial job of it, at that.

So, if you want to attack the "stupidity" of the research he is quoting, why not do that by engaging in a comprehensive critique of that research rather than using Mo Brooks as the straw man to impugn the research YOU haven't fully examined either?

The POINT of the last few years that has finally gained traction is that the scientific methodology used as evidence for the proposition that we are facing an impending environmental man-made catastrophe called "Global Warming" is reasonably suspect on many fronts. That suspicion has been credibly raised by other scientists -- not politicians!

I'm happy to let the experts fight this out and come to an eventual accepted scientific conclusion rather than give a lot of credence to political hair pulling matches between people like you and Mo Brooks.

How come you aren't?

Meteorology and religion belong in the same non-science category.

Wow.

Except that neither does global warming necessarily refer to a man-made catastrophe, nor is it reasonably suspect. And by claiming otherwise you're feeding in to anti-science propaganda.

Republicans are, I think, less scientifically stupid and more criminally recalcitrant. They deny science that might hinder profit. Incidentally, I support Neil Degrasse Tyson for President.

According to NASA, 97 percent of scientists currently publishing in peer reviewed journals accept that global warming is increasing and human activity contributes to this rise.

You obviously didn't watch his last tv show.

Speaking of Democrats who don't know shit about science...ever heard of water displacement? Achimedies principal??

Technically they are making sea levels rise..... every particle of matter that falls into the the ocean with enough mass to displace H2O mineralized to a specific gravity of approximately 1.025 (depending on temp/locations) moves the ocean out of it's way.

Guess where it goes when it moves?

Here let me help you out....

Yeah, how dare you question a white Republican's stupidity. Now you've upset the yellow man. :)

So technically when it's a nice day and millions jump in the ocean to cool off, we should issue tsunami warnings?

And the likely impact of that increase and the degree human activity contributes to it ultimately depends on scientific fact, and not necessarily on what a percentage of scientists (or most particularly anyone else) currently believes.

I'm not saying reducing greenhouse emissions isn't a good idea for every major industrial nation. But it's like the ongoing debate between vegetarians and meat eaters -- we don't know with certainty where the line in the sand is. But it is probably somewhere between a daily diet of fast food and a Big Mac once a month or so.

First, let me apologize for offending your delicate sensibilities. I guess I should also apologize for assuming that no one would make the mistake that when I said "republicans" or "right wingers" I was suggesting that it meant "every" one of them.

I guess I could have made the thread title "Why is the current administration and so many members of the republican party stupid when it comes to science" but that seemed a little long to me.

As for Mo Brooks, I don't think I need to do an extensive critique of the research he quoted because he didn't quote a scientific study when he made that statement, which would therefore, make refuting the nonexistent study impossible.

The article lists several other "theories" the right wing clings to despite overwhelming consensus that refutes it. But hey, just because certain scientists are bought by energy companies and publish papers refuting that consensus doesn't mean that it is legitimate or accurate.

In addition, far more republicans (60%) don't believe in evolution at all than democrats (38%).

Now you can feel free to attack me all you want but we are witnessing the post-truth era that the Trump administration is helping to mainstream. Scientists are being stripped from government committees and replaced by businessmen at an alarming rate.

You can similarly feel free to embrace the "alternative facts" that seem to be okay with the right wing. It speaks more about you than it does me, as do your attacks.

I don't think any rational person would debate the fact that water displacement would occur if rocks fell into the ocean.

I think no rational person would think that water displacement is responsible for the rise in sea levels as it is, to quote Phillip Duffy, a miniscule amount.
Put another way, it’s a volume of earth equivalent to taking the top five inches of every one of the United States’ 9.1 million square miles of land area and using it to coat the bottom of the world’s oceans. That would push sea levels up by 3.3 millimeters.

But, remember: That sea level rise happens annually. So every year, we’d need to take the top five inches of the United States, roll it in a ball and drop it in the ocean to get the sort of sea level rise we’re currently seeing. Don’t worry, though; assuming that the depth of Earth’s crust is about 40 kilometers in the United States, it would take 309,000 years for us to get to the mantle.

Except, of course, that sea level rise is occurring at an increasing rate. If someone could check on the white cliffs of Dover for us, we’d appreciate it.

But hey, you go ahead and believe Mo Brooks. :D

Not all Republicans are stupid. Some are actually pretty smart and level headed folks.
Some are really fucking stupid.
I'm confident the same can be said of Democrats.
