:cool: MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed into law a measure that stigmatizes gay people and bans giving children any information about homosexuality.

The lower house of Russia's parliament unanimously passed the Kremlin-backed bill on June 11 and the upper house approved it last week.

The ban on "propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations" is part of an effort to promote traditional Russian values over Western liberalism, which the Kremlin and the Russian Orthodox Church see as corrupting Russian youth and contributing to the protests against Putin's rule.

Hefty fines can now be imposed on those who provide information about the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community to minors or hold gay pride rallies.

The Kremlin announced Sunday that Putin has signed the legislation into law.

It reminds me of when an openly gay lawmaker was silenced by colleagues on the Pennsylvania House floor Thursday as he attempted to speak about the Supreme Court's decision to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act.

Conservative state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe (R-Butler), told WHYY that he believed Sims' comments would be a violation of "God's law."

"I did not believe that as a member of that body that I should allow someone to make comments such as he was preparing to make that ultimately were just open rebellion against what the word of God has said, what God has said, and just open rebellion against God's law," Metcalfe said.

It would also seem that all these Republicans so disgruntled with the emerging acceptance of gays as full human beings might be quite happy in Iran, or any number of other Islamic nations that punish gays, often with death. :cool:

The Republicans have made a very cynically calculated attack on any progressive changes in the areas of climate change, immigration, gay rights, tax reform, campaign finance reform (virtually anything good that could have happened during Obama's two terms in office) by launching a full out attack on every progressive reform that already occured during the past half century.

The greedy have managed to pull along the "not too brights" with them, but they are nonetheless losing their grip on power, because the majorities no longer think in such narrow and bigoted ways. :cool:

I have noticed - as a neutral observer - that the republican leaners are far more strident, hysterical and obusive in their replies and views.
 
Not at all, you lot are strident and offensive, _If I were looking for a political niche as a new arrival to US, you lot would put me right off.
