It's a historical thing as well as a locational thing.

Though, you did know that the South refers mainly to those states that were in the Confederacy during the Civil War?

Yes I did, but did you know that the Confederacy was not really a confederation of individual sovergine states (its original intent) but rather a republic with a bicamerial legislature and a centeralized government (rather like its federalist progenitor)?
