Hillary didn't make him a slimeball. Willie's a self-made man in that respect. Hillary just partnered up with him for the power of his various political offices. If she had any self-respect or honor, she would not have tolerated the serial infidelities much less helped organize the campaigns to suppress, conceal and avert public scrutiny of them. ...laws may vary from state to state regarding recording telephone conversations. In the state where I was licensed as an investigator, only one party to the conversation was required to know that it was being taped and I taped every single conversation. They were also fully admissible in court. Federal laws deal with wiretaps where no party is aware of the surveillance and they are pretty strict with some serious penalties. I would guess it wasn't illegal or she would have been prosecuted.

She was speaking in future tense, so the work that she "has done" at that point would be her own work as an elected official during the next 4 years. Not work she has done previous to now.

Subtle differences...

I was raised a good flag waving, patriotic American. I learned to duck and cover in the 60's. Even joined the Navy and now have a disability retirement. I thought I knew what socialism and communism were all about until I moved to Europe. Now that I'm settled in England I have to say that the real differences are between the theories and the practice. In practice, there isn't much difference between here and America. Same thing, different name. If society has a need that must be met, somebody pays for it, and it gets provided.

Take health care...in the US you have to pay for insurance and here we have the NHS (falling apart as it is). You hear people say health care here is "free". That's ridiculous. We pay with taxes that would make you gag. In the end it probably comes out about the same.

People are people and I hold these truths to be self-evident. If people want something they will pay for it. People always want more than they have. If someone wants to buy it then someone will provide it. Works everywhere. Never leave home without your Mastercard (because most don't take American Express).

As for Hillary only getting a law degree and then riding the coat tails of Bill, I must disagree strongly. Personally, I don't like the woman's politics. Don't know her personally so can't say I don't like her. Still, getting a law degree is no small accomplishment. Seems to me she was also hugely successful in practice which is also no small accomplishment. I don't like the idea that she ran for and won office in a state where she has never lived, but hell's bells that quite an accomplishment. If anybody was riding anybody it was Bill in Hillary's stockings.

As for these weird, one-sided political parties (not naming names here) we have them here as well. Pretty much have the same names. Offensive characters. We moved offices into a building shared by that "party". The "official" came out to greet me, refused to even look at my wife...she's the director of the company. I ignored him and went on upstairs. Later, CD-able (a widely recognised and frequently quoted psychologist) went down to introduce herself. Within two minutes he had managed to tell her that women had no business pursuing careers, they were not successful anyway, and should be home with children. He also said that he had been a social worker and "knew" that therapy and therapists are a waste of time. CD-able politely excused herself and left. Later he started asking if anybody knew whose Mercedes was blocking his escort in the parking space. CD-able had the distinct pleasure of walking out, dangling keys with that lovely symbol, and saying "It's mine."

Not the same -- big difference: in US, 40 million people are uninsured, and mostly children of working poor who don't get health insurance through employer but make too much (often just at poverty level) for Medicaid.

Also -- don't care for Hillary's politics either, but moving to run for Senate isn't that rare; see Bobby Kennedy.

I am deeply scared that we continue to produce men like Dubya, and that we allow them to finagle their way into positions of power. Then again, it isn't too surprising. Daddy promised, and this country was built on power being handed down through generations of white guys hell-bent on preserving the fortunes of themselves and their similarly elitist cronies. But, they do have the advantage. They (and I include Bill Clinton, self made or no, in this category) don't have to follow the rules or the laws--they get to make them.

Thus, like in the Tilden election of a century ago, a man can win the popular vote and lose the election. Another man can be handed the crucial swing votes from the only state run by a relative. And that, um...coincidence, can be enforced by the same court he will be restaffing. It must be nice for the Supreme Court to effectively choose their successors, it's a perk that few of us enjoy. It worries me that the Supreme Court just appointed our President. However you want to spin the events, that's the effect. It worries me immensely. I don't think I'd feel any better about them appointing Gore, Nader, or even me (though I'm not old enough anyway ).

And can I just say one more thing? If Ashcroft gets confirmed as Attorney General, I'm moving to another country. It's like Meese meets Buchanan, with a touch of Goebbels thrown in for flavor. I'm terrified by this guy, and I don't want to live in a country which would hand him power on a plate. And I take that pretty seriously--I truly believe that only a patriot bothers to express strong opinions about their government.

If I didn't love this country in so many ways, I might feel less betrayed by the failures of the system.

The only person who scares me is Dick Cheney. I think he's got real power and influence with the right people - Senate, business, DC power. Ashcroft scared me more on the Hill - which is good, because he'll probably get approved. He's got a lot of friends on both sides of the aisle, and both Reps and Dems view him as having both smarts and integrity (one of which was viewed by many as sadly lacking in Janet R. - guess which one).

It'll be interesting to see if Christie Whitman gets sunk for having illegal aliens in her past. What's with these people and their judgement??? Isn't there a politician anywhere with any judgement?!!?
