The literate president has been hospitalized for a quadruple bypass, scheduled for Saturday a.m. While I still have internet access and some thread, I wish him well.

A literary porn site is probably as likely a place to reach Bill as any.

:)

I am far from a fan of Clinton, but my grandfather had heart bypass so I can and do feel for anyone who has someone close going through it.

For what is it worth, Columbia Pres is one of the nicest and best hospitals in New York.

Knowing how you feel about him, I am really sorry this happened now. Between the storm and other worries its something I know you could have done without.

I hope everything you are facing now comes out well.

I had a triple bypass back in 2000. In and out of hospital in a week. Attending my friend's graduation three weeks later. These days it's sometimes done as preventative medicine (mine). Serious, yes, but these days almost routine.

Great man, great president. One little mistake was blown out of porportion, despite the mistake I had great respect for the man and what he accomplished as president of the US.

While recently promoting his book in an interview, he was asked why he did the mistake, his reply, with a grin, "because I could."

At that point I lost all respect for the man and what he stands for and hope others do not follow his lead.

He could have simply said he made a mistake, he could have said dozens of things which I would have no problem with. To have a former president state that is okay to do something wrong "because I could" is not acceptable to me personally.

I hope his surgery goes well and he recovers fully despite my outrage at that statement.

I am very much closer to a being a fan of former president Bill Clinton, now, than I ever was during his presidency. At that time, I was new to following politics, so I did not appreciate what we had.

It is comforting somehow for there still to be a living president who can ad lib an answer which is both intelligent and charitable, using polysyllabic words correctly, as well as correctly pronounced.

I offer Bill Clinton my best wishes now, as in the future.

Just saw Cinton on the Daily Show a few weeks ago.

He was subjected to more vicious and crooked attacks and investigations then any president I can remember, even Nixon, and amazingly he seems to bear no ill will. He's still smart, canny, and articulate, and it only made me appreciate him more.

I wish him all the best.

Get Well Soon!

I really should finish reading My Life, but the other half keeps buying me books by my fave author

Lisa,

I saw an interview where Clinton said that he did it simply because he could, but it didn't seem like bragging or anything to me. It sounded like he knew he fucked up and was letting things get out of his control when it happened. I didn't take it the same way you did. It sounded like an explanation, but not a further apology.

The unfortunate thing about all of our presidents being married is that there would be no better pick-up line than, "Hey, I'm the President."

You were talking, or whoever it was was talking, to a man who has done a lot more soul-searching about that subject than anyone. He said, "Because I could," in total honesty. In the end, evidently, he had been simply an opportunist. And in the end, he was able to admit that to himself.

That doesn't mean the same thing as "It was all okay, because I could."

He probably does not feel it was all okay, especially given the way it all shook down. But he has thought about it enough to realize the reason he kept doing it. Losing all respect for a man who introspected to find the truth and then admits the truth, even though it isn't pretty-- I think you are condemning him wrongly. I can't imagine his rueful grin implied his approval of that reason.

A quick hi-jack from the threads purpose. I am sorry some of you do not agree with me. I appreciate how everyone has done so with reason and civility. I also thank you for the links so I could re-read the exact words in the interview.

I like the PM's and mails, and when you say things I listen and think about it.

I havn't changed my mind but I do appreciate your sharing your views with me.

Back on track I hope the surgery goes well.

I'm not surprised about the bypass--I figured Bill's southern-fried eating habits would catch up with him eventually. I wish him all the best.

Buchanan wasn't married. But then, isn't it starting to come out that he was gay?
