Remember when...

Remember when you could get gumballs for a penny?

I do!

I also remember when going to the dime store was a treat. If you were REALLY lucky your mom would let you get a cherry phosphorous too! There was a real soda jerk and everything!

http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf80828074.tip.html

Cherry phosphates are as American as apple pie - and this diner staple can be made at home, too. Try making a phosphate to spice up a burger and fries dinner.
Ingredients

* 12 oz club soda
* 2 tsp. cherry flavored syrup, such as Torani
* 2 tsp. lemon juice, fresh or reconstituted
* maraschino cherry, optional

Directions
Pour syrup into tall glass. Add club soda and lemon juice. Stir, add cherry and serve.

Note: Torani syrup is found in the coffee and tea aisle of most supermarkets for about $4 a bottle.

I remember my dad throwing a fit because gas went above 20 cent a gallon!

I remember our local grocery store getting a "magic eye" opening door!

It was, according to our church, a sign of the "end times."

LMAO.

Really? LOL We didn't go to church when I was a kid, so I missed that one. I've heard, many times, that the increased dependence on credit/debit cards is a sign of the end times.

Oh yeah, there are endless signs of the "end times."

And yet . . . we haven't reached them yet.

Hmm.

When I was in fifth grade, my parents were divorce. I was living that summer in a trailer home near a college.

I remember riding my bike to this tiny store in this teeny town. I'd stop for a snow ball. 25 cents!

I'd get pringles, jello and cool whip at the store.

A local church I didn't belong to let me borrow Nancy Drew books all summer. I read the whole series then went on to other mysteries they had.

Mostly, I was left alone. Which is often the best thing for a kid. My mom was busy working and going to college. My dad sent me long letter meant for her, complaining about bills. Ah, the good ole days.

LOL.

I think we won't recognize those signs until we've passed them. Rather like with Jesus - it was clearly outlined when to look for him, but no one noticed that until after he'd come. And honestly, I'm not too worried. First off even the apostles thought that they were in the end times. Second, one of the big signs that's supposed to happen is they're supposed to build Solomons Temple right where it originally was. To do that it would have to be RIGHT NEXT DOOR to the Muslim Mosque. Another is a world leader is supposed to rise that brings world peace. I do not see either happening in my life time.

According to the dude who stands on our street corner, the date for that is 2060. One of my friends here told me that his sign used to say it was coming in 2010...guess that didn't work out so well. LOL.

Remember when Saturday was the only day cartoons were on TV? I can remember getting up at 6am and tiptoeing to the basement, then turning the TV on as low as possible so my parents wouldn't wake up. Prime time was from 7am until about 11am, after that the choices got slimmer and slimmer but by then all of us neighbourhood kids would have been sent outside to play anyway. Nevertheless, Saturday was a magic day.

I remember cartoons being on every day before and after school, but Saturday cartoons were the best. I remember waking up at 5AM and staring at the colored lines on the screen while pouring myself a big bowl of Cheerios with a pound of sugar over the top. Once Mom woke up, she would cook up bacon then fry eggs in the bacon grease (saturated fat? what's that?) and she'd make me eat a big plate of that too. Then my sister and I got kicked out of the house to play with the other neighborhood kids until lunch, and we'd all descend on one house where that mom would make sandwiches for everyone, and we'd play again until it got dark (which was an arbitrary "time" and resulted in no end of negotiations until "when the street lights come on" was set as the neighborhood rule).

We also walked up hill both ways in the snow without snow boots to school and were grateful for it, and seat belts wrinkled clothes too much to be a bother when sitting on the bucket seat up front between my mom and dad because my sister and I fought like pissed off cats if left alone in the back seat together.

Now I feel old.

All a bit wrong-side-of-the-Atlanticcy, but....

The thing that most often amazes me when I look back is remembering when you used to be able to smoke on the Tube (London subway), and it seemed a completely normal thing to do. And it wasn't all that long ago, either (or doesn't seem it, when you're as old as me - just googled it - it was banned on the trains in 1984).

Also, it doesn't seem that long to me since there were only three TV channels in the UK (just googled that one too - the fourth channel started in 1982. Now there are gazillions of the things).

Blimey, I feel ancient now.

Just a fluff thread for random happy nostalgia.

It was a magic day....who could ever sleep late when there was Road Runner, Bugs Bunny, Tom, Jerry and Wiley Coyote on TV!!!!!!!

But then again I remember when there were only three channels and the TV went OFF the air after the national anthem played.....

Saturday morning cartoons rocked... I loved Superfriends... LOL I remember that I would HATE it when college football started and knocked the cartoons off the air...

And come on folks, "I'm just a bill, oh yes I'm only a bill, sitting here on capital hill...." or "Interplanet Janet she's a galaxy girl, the solar system is from a future world...." or "conjunction junction! what's your function?"

Yikes... that was off the top of my head...

I remember those! Snorks and Galaxy High were some of my favorites (yeah, I admitted it). Jetsons was another favorite, but I only remember that one from before/after school. Then there was the internal debate over which channel to watch because one had the Carebears, My Little Pony, Strawberry Shortcake, Gem and the like, and the other had Voltron, Transformers, GI Joe, and stuff. VCRs were just becoming a fad so we didn't have one to record one and watch the other on the one other TV in the house. Usually, I did the channel flip and watched both until I got griped at.

Land of the Lost was the last one to run, then the National Geographic show, or college football would come on. Or if watching the other channel, Sooooooul Train!

The ice cream truck! Oh what a beautiful noise that music was on a hot summer day!

My favorites were always the characters with the gumball eyes. Pink Panther, Ninja Turtles, Mickey Mouse...
