A mature married woman meets a man online and they become quite close over time. She gets to like and trust him. They slowly move to having cyber sex, and share pictures. Nothing too bad, maybe a picture of the woman in a nice skirt and dress, showing her face. A second picture shows her upper body in a bra, but not showing her face.

The man learns more and more about her, and she let things slip that she shouldn't have, but she doesn't really worry because she trusts him. She confides in him that she had a short affair many years ago. It ended when her husband found out. The man eventually works out her identity, and finds her Facebook page.

He tells her that he wants them to meet, and make their online affair a physical one. She tells him that she doesn't want that. He tells her that if she doesn't agree to meet he will tell her husband. He will show him the chat transcripts he has saved, and the photos she had shared with him. She tries to call his bluff. but he is insistent. He says her husband will believe him, especially in light of her previous adultery.

The woman has no choice. To save her marriage she agrees to meet him.

At first she is very reluctant. But the sex is so good, it becomes fully consensual, and they continue their secret affair.

Don't care for the blackmail angle but do like the reluctant affair. The wife knows it's wrong and in the beginning doesn't want anything beyond online and she makes it clear to the other guy. However both push to expand her boundaries until it ends up physical as well as emotional.

I tend to agree that using blackmail is a bit riskier than some would like. It has potential to provoke the reader and depending on how the character is build up, could bring you along or not. Having a bit of a likeable villain is, I believe, a wonderful thing as it creates so many opportunities.
I hope you will have fun writing it, regardless.

I would read this... even with the taboo beginning!

I say do the blackmail, but it should be really subtle or even almost accidental...

The man says, "What would your husband think if he knew you were doing this?"... or "What would you do if your husband saw these photos you sent me?"

The man doesn't come out and say she has to meet him in person, but she has read between the lines a little more than she should have and assumes he will rat her out if she doesn't go along with what he wants.

Yes.

The girl effectively blackmail herself into doing what she wants but sees as "wrong" using the guy as an echo.

The guy may be speaking in hypotheticals. Or even be genuinely concerned about the girl, only it comes out tone deaf, especially easy in writing. Or he thinks reminding the risks turns her on.

The story line reminds me of a couple i used to see. She could only participate if she felt she was being forced. The husband supplied me with some nude photos of the wife and when she indicated reluctance to participate I would produce the photos and tell her that unless she changed her mind I would be sending them to her parent, her boss, etc etc. And I would tell the husband to strip her and hold her down while I fucked her. I only met with them a couple of times as I became uncomfortable with the set up. It was clear she enjoyed it because we would sit around after the event and chat about how the evening went and which bits she enjoyed the most, but as i say, it all got a bit too real for me so I gave it a miss.

Banal. No originality. Been done so many times before. In fairness, maybe this board should be renamed 'FRESH Story Ideas'. I'm aware it's said that there are only a limited number of basic themes one can tackle... but at least some attempt to give a new angle should be made.

Yes. And agree with the above posts in re the 'ickiness' of blackmail. Yet there are twists available which might freshen things a bit. So let us put the almost used by date items from the fridge onto the blue plate special shall we?

Blackmailers are in a precarious position. They first must completely depend on their victims sense of shame. Then must worry about revenge. And of course their mercenary behavior is a weakness that can be used against them. So first twist is the honeypot gambit. The husband is out to entrap the male lover for some purpose and the wife acts as a contrite pawn - to expiate her guilt from a prior affair perhaps? Or the woman is acting as an agent for one of her friends who'd been similarly ensnared by the man. Tables are turned - the ending may be as kink filled as the writer imagines. This combines both honeypot and revenge. To serve it cold - well I imagine a block of ice and...

Or - and this is warmed over made for TV I'll be the first to admit - the entire background of the woman turns out to be fabricated. Facebook page, all the things said, every bit of history she fed to the gullible guy. To freshen this one up - the woman? She does these things solely for kicks, and he hadn't been the first. Sends a parting package to the guy's employer/partners/spouse/family as she begins to size up her next mark. Yeah she's a sociopath but she does have some rules - if the men don't try to coerce her into anything more than cyber she just ghosts them when she gets bored.

It pulls me out of a story when someone is blackmailed over something that is not at all controversial.

Just because the victim is ashamed doesn't mean that anyone else will care or be scandalized by it.

I think at the end we both sort of agree, yet coming from different angles. The OP posits that the woman had already been involved in an affair - yet got blackmailed into another even though she'd been involved in cyber etc. True this is a gruel which has been served and served and served again - I was only responding to the initial post.

For blackmail to work there must be some reason for the victim to become ensnared - some harm must happen to that person. Shame is a basic human emotion - fear works as well. The reader does not have to agree with it - so either the victim is usually portrayed as naïve or a buffoon when the activity that is blackmailable seems - on reflection - all full of WTF. The OP didn't portray her idea as a farce. Indeed she states that in order to save her marriage she agrees to the assignation. So yeah - shame is involved as well as fear etc.

Put me in the WFT column as well - I find it hard to suspend my disbelief in the story idea as posited.

Personally, I like blackmail stories (I enjoy a bit of taboo and villainy in my fiction) but I agree it will be controversial, and you should probably put a warning up front that it's in there. Not that that will stop people from reading and making rude comments anyway, but it might reduce it a bit.

I have published stories in the past but found it too stressful and couldn't see why I would put myself through it all. Still enjoy writing though.

Same, there are some concepts I'd love to write about that are within Lit's rules, but i know they'd provoke people and I just don't want the stress.

I think write what you like. What if you figure a way to have the woman’s point of view is super reluctant and scared of the situation and deletes the account, but after a few days continues to go back to the guy in an almost “addictive” sort of way. She can’t stop thinking about how aroused she is when this guy tries to use blackmail. She gets on and argues and beg the guy to not use it. He is so subtle in his ways that he reassures her and she gets caught up in another conversation and sends something else that puts her right into the fire again. But this time it ignites a fire inside of her….I personally like the build up and the woman’s point of view in this type of situation because it makes the reluctant nature more appealing, since she is Sharing her thoughts. Anyway. I hope this helps. If not. Please be nice. Lol

I'll be honest, this one seems ludicrous to me. "I'm going to fuck this blackmailer, to save my marriage." I don't see it.

Instead, she comes clean. Despite the previous affair, the fact that this has been entirely cyber is to her benefit.
She tells her husband the truth and that she's been lonely with him working so much. He's initially furious but realizes that it took guts to admit it and wants to stay true to him. Make-up sex ensues.

Then husband lures the would-be blackmailer to a hotel room, where he whips the guy's ass. Nothing that would require a hospital but a pretty decisive beating. He takes a few photos and tells him that if he reports this, he'll turn over his attempt at blackmail to the cops.

"I'll do a month in county lockup for whipping you, but you'll do a couple of years in jail for blackmail and end up on the sex offender registry."

Then he goes home, shows the wife the photos, and promises he'll make more of an effort to keep her happy. They have tremendous aggressive sex and live happily ever after.

The story idea is very good but it appears not based on reality. Basically, you have to explore the psychology and circumstances of the woman more in depth to show why she would take such a risk of an online and what type of forum would support such accidental meeting. I recently joined a similar forum a few days ago but it is all about making money, so I came here.

In this day and age, it is the woman who can take the first risky step, not the man. Its the woman who says yes or no.

It is a sad story to start, but if you decided to continue, is it worth it?
