Rejected again? Why?

I have been trying to get my first story approved and has just recived my second rejection. After the first one, I contacted an editor on the list and we gave the story a serious overhaul. I double and triple checked the guidelines for submitting stories and I really can't figure out what I'm missing!

At the rejections I got the same both times. Some standard reply about checking my spelling.

My editor checked again, and found maybe 4 or 5 words we didn't find last time, but I refuse to believe that those few errors would be grounds for rejection!

So what can I do? Am I missing something obvious?

I've also serached the forum extensively, but no threads seem to match my problem.

So please (begging on my knees here) someone help me with this before I go nuts!

If its been checked by the bot and not a person, yes, those "few" spelling errors along with any unusual names CAN get it thrown back for spelling.

It really, really doesn't like Elven names I can tell you.

Resubmit with a note (not forgetting to put edited in the title)
In the notes division explain what the problem is...
That will usually help :)
Good Luck!

IIRC, that standard rejection for spelling is for "spelling and grammar" and can be triggered by losing all of your paragraph breaks in the conversion to HTML. It can also be triggered by the codes that some wordprocessers use for "special characters" like 'smart quotes' or accented characters.

Try saving your story as plain text and opening with Notepad, or Wordpad if it's over 64Kb. (both are part of Windows' normal installation package.) That won't necessarily show up accented character problems because your computer is probably set up to display Danish as the default language, but it should show up any wordprocesser specific problems like lost paragraph breaks and stray formatting codes.

To fix lost paragraph breaks, make sure the wordprocesser version has two paragraph breaks between paragraphs and re-save in plain text format (it's a pain to find all of the paragraph breaks in Notepad if they aren't doubled already)

Finally, if you've been submitting in RTF format, DON'T! Use Copy and Paste into the submission form or upload a plain text file with HTML tags for bold anditalics where needed.

RTF format contains about twice as much text in it as you see on the screen and the 'bot that converts RTF to HTML is really very easily confused -- it may be passing RTF formatting strings to the spell check which doesn't recognise them as words.

It normally takes me several tries to get my chapters approved for the same reasons. Bot spell checkers don't ya just love um.

P.S. love the mental pic of you begging on your knees but I'm kinky that way.

Thanks for the replies.

I have written it in the wordpad in the first place, and I submitted it by copy/paste, so we should be ok there.

Second time around, I did make a note, saying I had it edited. Seems to have made no difference.

Pure: I will send you a sample. Thank you very much for your help. :D

I've always sent in my stories as .doc files. Never had any formatting or spell check problems, and I wait anaverage of 5-7 days before a story goes up.

Here's a funny little quirk that I've recently discovered; server security software doesn't like the word "curl" in php applications (literotica is run on php software). It means something in computer language, and not anything to do with pubes, wigs, eyelashes, laughing lips or writhing bodies. GRR!.

That's usually as long as I have to wait. I was really surprised when my Winter Holidays entry got posted as soon as it did.

Well in that case, Hello and Welcome to the Author's Hanghout!

Nah, I'm just kidding. You were welcome even without a great rack ;)

Yes, welcome to the AH. You are welcome, even without a great rack, but you are even more welcome with one, especially if you post nude pics of yourself. :D

Don't proofread using only Spellcheck, because it won't catch all errors. You must eyeball the copy.

I wrote, I spellchecked, I re-read (maybe 10 times. Found loads of odd mistakes) and tried to submit. Got rejected.

Found myself an editor, (propably would have been a good way to start as English isn't my first language) got the whole thing corrected and submitted again. Rejected again.

I can only assume it must be a bot thing, because there is no other explanation for the rejection than: Check everything is spelled correctly.

*scratching my head*

Maybe I wrote curl somewhere....

Did you? I'm really curious!

I know how to work around it on my own site, but-- not here.

my stories sometimes got rejected for that reason, apparently because i had non-english quotes in there. but a note to the editor was enough to fix that when i re-submitted...

Sorry to hear of your troubles, but just out curiosity how do you get notified that your story has been rejected? Do you get an email to that effect?

I hope it gets sorted for you, as if there isn't enough personal tension about posting a new story!

Every writer who posts here has an index where information on stories appears. This includes score, access to PC and other info. When a new story is submitted, it appears there as "pending" and this eventually changes to "accepted" or "rejected". If it says "rejected" the author can click on the notice and get the reason for the rejection. Usually, it is posed as a question, such as "Did your story involve underage sex" or other such question. Why it is worded like that, rather than just saying the story involved underage sex is something I don't know.

Ok so... assuming Pure finds nothing obvious wrong with my story, should I just try and resubmit with a note about my troubles?

I ask because I made a note on my second submission, saying I had submitted before and now had the help of an editor. Didn't seem to make any difference at all. Anything else I should remember?

Thanks B, I have a couple of stories posted here and know the page you mean, I just wasn't aware that is where you could expect to be told your story was rejected or what form that rejection might take - thanks for the info.
