Is the story of the year that nothing truly globally terrible happened? The terrorists went on, but their scale was minimal compared to the day of four planes, the rhetoric was hot but we did not send tens of thousands of troops into Iraq, I've not heard of a species going extinct in spite of ecological crises in various places (though the Iberian Lynx may be next...)
Granted, it opened with guns blazing and bombs bursting, it may yet to turn out to have been the calm before the storm, but as years go it could have been a lot worse for the planet and the people. In fact, I dare say that if we can keep the carnage to the same level for another year this will rate several stars on the "hope for humanity" scale,
