References

This is something that I've been wondering about for awhile. Does anyone include references to things in their story threads? I know I tend to put both obvious and subtle references in my threads on occasion.

Apparently your references are so subtle I don't have any idea what you are talking about. Could you give an example to explain what you mean by references?

Do you mean popular culture references? Like having a character or situation hint at some current TV or movie situation?

I don't think I do it too often, but a couple of characters in my story Get Me To The Church On Time use movie references to talk unfavorably about some of the other characters behind their back. ("Debbie Does the Dalai Lama is NOT the theme I wanted for my son's wedding!") But one is a screenwriter and the other works at a talent agency, so it seemed appropriate.

I deliberately referenced Xena and Gabrielle in a thread I contributed to Imhotep's A Weekend In An All Girls Dorm, but the characters referred to teasingly as X and G haven't put in an actual appearance yet. It seemed appropriate in context.

So...I'd say occasional but obvious references based on what I can recall.

Well that was what I was meaning references to popular culture. Although the ones I think are obvious are also probably just as subtle. Here's a few of mine so far.

Rock Festival - Kacey is named after the pornstar Kacey Buy.

Secret Agent - Well there are several in this story. Lieto and Saskia are both names taken from Dune by Frank Herbert. Saskia's actual appearance was a homage to Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Vincennes is Kevin Spacey's character in LA Confidential.

I don't think there were any others, although when picking a new character name it can end up being a pornstar or someone famous.
