Despite threats of primary challenges from Trump and threats of violence from MAGA loons, some Indiana Republicans did the right thing. Good for them.

Trump has been urging Republicans nationwide to redraw their congressional maps in an unusual campaign to help the party maintain its thin majority in the House of Representatives. Although Texas, Missouri, Ohio and North Carolina went along, Indiana did not — despite cajoling and insults from the president and the possibility of primary challenges.

“The federal government should not dictate by threat or other means what should happen in our states,” said Spencer Deery, one of the Republican senators who voted no on Thursday.

I once collected petition signatures for a ballot initiative to change over to that system in Florida -- but the state supreme court, in a decision that made no sense at all unless explained in partisan terms (that is, in bipartisan terms -- neither Rs nor Ds wanted to give up their legislative redistricting power), kept it off the ballot.

Michigan is one of those 7 states with an independent commission. The results look less ridiculous on a map, but the commission members had less experience in taking flak from all sides. The lawsuits dragged on for years. There is a learning curve. But the state still has absentee voting, by constitutional amendment.

We have that here in Washington but nobody is really nonpartisan. So we have a panel of I think 7 but don’t quote me on exact number. So it’s 3 dems and 3 republicans but you have to have an odd number in case a tie needs to be broken. So they rotate which side gets a 4th member. Generally means you end up with a partisan decision anyway.

Missouri Republicans are pulling all kinds of bullshit in their desperate attempt to gerrymander. The voters want to stop them.

Missouri Referendum Backers Say They Can Still Block GOP Gerrymander

The Missouri Constitution gives voters the power to veto acts of the legislature by gathering signatures and putting a referendum measure on the ballot. Last week, advocacy group People Not Politicians submitted more than 300,000 signatures – far more than the number required — to the state. Now, the map should be paused until Missourians have the opportunity to vote on the gerrymander, they say.

But Missouri Secretary of State Denny Hoskins claimed the map won’t be paused until after the signatures are verified – a significant delay tactic that, if successful, would likely allow Republicans to run the 2026 election using the new map.

Mike Wolff, a former Missouri Supreme Court justice, said case law is on the side of referendum organizers and clearly states the map should be paused now. He cited court precedent going back to 1914 – shortly after the referendum provision was added to the Missouri Constitution – stating that legislation is paused when enough signatures have been submitted.

Republicans love gerrymandering and hate allowing the people to vote on critical issues.

Utah Republicans are desperately trying to force a gerrymandered voting map on the state.

Utah GOP asks state Supreme Court to revive blocked congressional gerrymander

1. Utah voters passed the anti-gerrymandering Proposition 4 in 2018.
2. In 2020, Republicans carved up left-leaning Salt Lake City into four voting districts to nullify Democrats’ votes.
3. This year a state judge struck down the obviously gerrymandered voting map.
4. The judge rejected a revised map from the Republicans and adopted a remedial plan put forward by the anti-gerrymandering plaintiffs.
5. The Republicans appealed the judge’s decision.
6. The Utah Supreme Court will consider the appeal.

Hopefully the court will uphold the voters’ decision to ban gerrymandering in the state.
