Um, that's wrong. They're be no Tolkien without Beowulf.

I would also point out that Shakespeare wrote for the masses and none of his plays is based on an original thought of his. All were common tales of the era.

As for my favorite classics, count me in on "The Great Gatsby" and anything by Tolkien or Poe. I'll toss in "Gone with the Wind" by Margaret Mitchell

For new potential classics, I think Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" is brilliant and I would not classify it as horror. I don't do horror. It's more dark mystery.

And Lovecraft wouldn't have existed without Poe and Machen.

There would be no Tolkien without Homer.

The bible would not exist as it is without Egyptian folklore.

You wanna keep going?
well, this is utter bullshit. Lovecraft was not inspired by Poe, he was mostly inspired by Egyptian mythology. I wonder if you people actually read what you claim to read.
Medjay, some day I will leave King in the dust. btw, where are your stories?

Feel free to quiz me on Lovecraft, Poe OR Egyptian mythology sometime.

Oh and by the way, Lovecraft's admiration for Poe can be found in his essay Supernatural Horror in Literature.

Scott X, Master of Literature, thinks a discussion of lit involves asking about an author's biography. Genius.

instead of mouthing off, as you always do, why not answer the Q's. btw, write anything that would qualify as lit.?
I never said I was a master of lit. but when it comes to certain genres, I know more than most.

Some kind of cancer.

I have no idea. What does that have to do with his writing?

And are you going to respond to the essay or just ignore it in favor of trivial trivia?

Oooohhh riiiight! Thank you. You just saved me a major headache.

I'm still workin' on 'em.

They'll be coming to a bookstore near you, hopefully sometime before I die.

You ask vapid, pointless questions. In what ways are your questions related to a discussion of Lovecraft's influences and literary themes? Please enlighten us with something worthwhile.

you said you knew everything about him and Poe but you wont answer the Q's. A writers life has EVERYTHING to do with his writings.

I would like to ask you the same favor. My questions are relevant because they pertain to his life. Look at my above post.

They relate to his life, certainly--but not specifically to the statement posited by Sunstruck.

If I asked you to discuss the major themes of Bocaccio's _Decameron_, you'd blurt out "pasta."

First off, no I didn't say that. I know next to nothing about Lovecraft's LIFE. I have however read most if not all of his work. I think I'd stand up well against questions on his WRITING which is what you were professing to know so much about.

You obviously don't know anything about any of the author's who's names you've thrown about in this thread else you wouldn't have resorted to Google trivia bullshit.

This promises to be a thread replete with amusement to be gained (yet again) at DeScott's expense.

oh ok  How many stories did he write? Where did he write them? How many movies have been adapted from his tales?

KM, good to see you around. You still haven't shown me your list of credentials. Perhaps you are bullshitting? That'd be my guess.
