Red square with numeral in it.

Hello, I an very new to chat. Occasionally, a number in a red square appears in the upper left of the screen. What does it mean? I click on it and nothing happens, or it goes away.

Also, the red numbers indicate the number of participants in a particular chat room

The numbers in the red squares are the number of unread messages since you last looked in that chat room aren't they? At least that's what I always thought they were!
